I actually had to hold myself back from laughing during a CFI interview I just got back from When they threw min. wage (8/hr) at me. They told me that unlike until now where I had to pay to get flight hours, They were going to pay me to fly. They justified it by saying their CFIs used to be "independant contractors" and got 15/hr, but the IRS is up their butts and wants the CFIs to be school employees so we'd get paid for pre/post flight so it comes out to about the same.

I don't make much at my current gig, but I probably would have burned - check that - nuked that bridge. You wouldn't have been able to rebuild that bridge for thousands of years for fear of radiation poisoning. But that's just me.
 
And this is in Socal? Not that 8/hr is close to acceptable anywhere, but def not in Socal!!!

The lowest I ever made was $20/hr FWIW

I think I would honestly tell them to their face that those pay rates are pathetic.

If they need another CFI, then I'll do the free lance route and charge what I want (40/hr) and keep 100%.
 
Reminds me when a local flight school owner was trying to poach my former company's pilots last year for part-time CFI work. When he finally got to me, I didn't beat around the bush. The first thing I asked about was the money.

"Oh, $20 per contact hour. It's a pretty good deal."
"Can you double that?"
"Well no, we charge the student $40/hr for instruction."

Sorry, no dice!
 
Yea it was in socal. When i told them that I'd have to get back to them, I heard one of the interviewers say to the other "oh we should have told him that we'll have to get back to him" because they offered me the job about 5 minutes after I walked into the office. I guess they were thinking hey if we can get someone for 8/hr we should take him. They didn't ask me any technical questions. They didn't really ask me any HR questions for that matter either
 
yeahh that is horrible, i hope you showed them the "pimp hand". I have never made less than 20 through a flight school. You should have said ill have to get back to you once i check the price of Top Roman soup and see if i can get a free box to live in at costco..keep the search alive.. I know SAA is hiring out there. Get paid for what your worth bud

Why'd you hold back from laughing? It wasn't an aviation job, but just a few months ago I started a new job. When they offered it to me they lowballed the salary right out of the gate. I laughed out loud and told them to call back to offer me the job again when they got serious. I recieved a call back 30 minutes later with an offer that was 10% higher.
 
$8/hr is straight up minimum wage in CA. I'm sure they'll find someone to do it for this crazy low pay...but just remember, you get what you pay for!
 
That's pretty bad - the pay....and the whole bit about the IRS and contract employees... at least they could have thought of a better excuse than that bogus one.

interviewer couple days ago: "Have you seen our pay scale? ...it's pretty low" answer: "so why exactly is it that low...? If you pay your pilots X, do you pay your mx guys less? Do you not care about your customers?"
 
Good Lord! That is so pathetic, that it's insulting. You can make more at McDonalds and at least get a fricking Happy Meal. Good luck on your continued search, btw.
