Brian,
Check out Baseops.net message board....Tons of good gouge over there.......As far as UPT slot in the Guard/Res goes, it would be a good idea to become a member of the unit first, they always prefer to hire from within. Also, many of the Guard Units pay 100% tuition for college, and you get to pocket the M.G.I.B. montly paycheck........Take em for all you can!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Today there was a marine recruiter at my hs and to tell the thruth, he was the reduste recruiter out of any other recruite r of the other services that I have seen. He didn't know about the vision requirements needed to become a pilot. I did but just asked to see if he would tell me.

I'm considering going to the A.F and trying out for a slot. Considering more ANG or Reserves. My instructor said that ANG and NG were know as "weekend warriors" but this is not really true anylonger for certain reasons. So how many days a week does a airman work? If I don't get a pilot slot, I'm still considering any position in the cockpit. What exactly is a crew chief? Like, what does he do?

[/ QUOTE ]

That is a bunch of crap!!!!! I know many AD pilots that only fly once or twice a month. I know many res/AG pilots that fly every week. I think the "weekend warrior" remark is ridiculous. It makes a "Guard bum" look as if he is not profficient, and thast he is just a idiot that jumps in the cockpit on the weekends.

[/ QUOTE ]

I understand that the "weekend warrior" thing is not true. In order for the active service to operate, there are certain support units that have to go as well as reserves. To me, the only difference between active, reserves, and ANG is that they train more or less hours.

Not somuch training! More or less B.S. I know in active duty there are many days of sitting around doing absolutely nothing. That is why a lot of people get assigned additonal duties, not realted tpo flying.

talk about duties not related to flying! I've got about 10 right now, from running a budget to tracking down sonobouys from all over Europe. The military isn't the place to go if you want to build up flight time, although the flight time you do get can be pretty intense.

If you're thinking about flying helos and want some fixed wing time try the Navy. Most initial instructors in the T-34 are helo pilots and even most station pilots in C-12 (Military King Air) are former helo pilots. I even know reserve 737 and DC-9 pilots who were originally in helos. The helo community has the most pilots and they seem to suck up a lot of the shore tour fixed wing slots leaving some of us out of the cockpit. I'm not bitter though

I would actually like to work as a logistics pilot. Do they also not fly a lot? Air Refueling doesn't sound bad either.

Just didn't want to waste time on the less-manly punks out there....

There's nothing wrong with that!! Trust me, having been there...it's a recruiting tactic.

A recruiter goes to a high school. The girls are surrounding him, oogling over his uniform (as it should be...). The girls want him. Everyone can see it.

Meanwhile, Jodie is watching and he's saying to himself, "Why do the girls want to have him? What can I do to have the girls?". next thing you know, Jodie's dumb-a$$ is on a plane to Parris Island....

And Ssgt Smith still gets the girls...

Yeah, I confess. That's really why I'm in the military...to meet and impress women...um, you all are girls right?

However you do need a recruiter that does know how to sign you up for the Flight Warrant program if you are "comming of the streets".

So is there a differance between say walking into your local Army recruiter's office versus walking into a National Guard office if your coming off the street ???

I get the impression if your coming off the street and just go thru a recruiter ya have to know what buttons to push to get into the program ... whereas when i last spoke with my state's guard unit about the WOFT program it wasn't until after basic and AIT I would be able to apply.

Does the National Guard just look to promote from within first for example like many air crew positions ??

I have never ever seen someone get hired off the street at a Guard Unit. I know many that have tried. They have so many enlisted that can go from the unit(since no degree requirements) they just hire from within. There might be a few units out there, but I know many that have been turned down, all having good packages........Technically you could, BUT technically you can be a Air Force Guard pilot with 18 months on college and a school waiver......Happens, bu tunless your Das is the Squadron commander, or a star, its not gonan happen to you

Crosing over from helos to fixed wing inside the military is pretty tough. It is very rare since Uncle Sam spent all that money on you, he doesn't want to hear about you changing your mind.

A guy I know has worked the system well in that regard. He started out as an AFRES PJ, got selected for an Army Guard warrant slot flying Apaches, then once fully qualified in Apaches he transferred to a full-time Guard slot flying C-12s (military King Air)! And then got a commission! Without a degree!

I like the guy, but I think the military hasn't come close to getting its money's worth out of him.
