Freelance CFI Help

The way it works here (not me) is the CFI rents the airplane in his name and teaches the student in it. The student cannot rent the airplane due to insurance requirements unless the schools CFI is in the plane with them. But the CFI who is insurable, can rent the plane and teach in it. Happens all the time.

So if Joe Shmo private pilot wanted to rent and take it to Vegas for the weekend, he'd have to have a CFI on board with him to conduct the flight?

Obviously for solo flights pre private pilot and post private pilot, your school still allows the student to take the bird up for the training flights (local or x-country) but the a/c is in the CFI's name?

Kinda confused.

This is the good old USA. Free enterprise is the name of the game. Tell whomever wants you to instruct them that they need to arrange for 1) ALL insurances, liability, hull and for good measure a life policy for you too, (that'll look after any litigation), 2) the airplane and 3) sign a contract for your services. If they have enough resources ie. cash, then you will be gaining some compensation for your expertise. Otherwise, walk away. The lure of money will be strong but if they want to become a CFI with your endorsements then in the end, they will be competing with you, assuming he/she are local to your area.

Thanks for all the replies.

I have no plans of incorporating or setting up a DBA.

But i will look into the AOPA CFI insurance, and I will also write up a letter of agreement spelling out my hourly rates/no show fees and other stuff. So this way me and the customer are both on the same page.

I did my SE ATP Land and Sea with Ryan Aviation at FLG. Loved the open-air bar with the rooftop vantage right on the Atlantic. (Sorry, don't remember the highway or establishment names). Was a fun time for me in Dec '08 in FL.
