PHOENIX, March 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Mesa Air Group MESA today announced an expansion of its strategic partnership with Delta Air Lines. Under this new agreement Freedom Airlines, a wholly owned subsidiary of Mesa Air Group, will fly twelve, 37-seat, De Havilland Dash 8 aircraft in support of Delta Air Lines expanding operations at its New York-JFK hub. The term of the new agreement is three years. The aircraft will be operated under a capacity purchase arrangement similar to Mesa's existing Delta Connection agreement under which Freedom Airlines flies 50-passenger regional jets. The Dash 8s covered under this agreement will be incremental to the 16 Dash 8 aircraft currently operated by Mesa Air Group.

Under the agreement the new service will commence between July and September 2006 from Delta's New York-JFK hub. The aircraft are currently scheduled to operate to Washington DC - Dulles; Philadelphia, PA; Syracuse, NY; Albany, NY; Hartford, CT; Providence, RI; Norfolk, VA; Richmond, VA; Washington DC - Reagan and Baltimore, MD.

"We are honored to be given the opportunity to expand our operations with Delta Air Lines," said Jonathan Ornstein, Chairman and CEO of Mesa Air Group. "We appreciate Delta's confidence in Mesa and look forward to playing an integral role in the Delta Connection family," added Ornstein.

"Mesa has proven itself a highly reliable, cost-effective and flexible partner. In addition, Mesa's employees have done a great job of taking care of our customers," said Shawn Anderson, President, Delta Connection.

Looks like my former CFI buds at Freedom will get a crack at the Dash 8 PIC. Hmmm, maybe I should have gone to Mesa...ah well.

Now, the real question is why is Mesa's stock dropping after this annoucement?

I sure hope Delta's international expansion from JFK (along with these extra regional services) and ATL combined with the bosted SLC services this summer work out well. I hear there'll be a lot of extra flights and new services. are they getting new planes for this, or just increasing utilisation of current fleet?
Either way should keep Doug and his colleagues busy this summer!

Well, here's the scoop on who will get to fly these things.

12 aircraft, staffed at 4 crews each. 48 FOs will all be newhires. 48 CAs will come from the current Dash 8 ranks (Mesa certificate), or from the street. Our contract does not allow our RJ FOs to upgrade into a turboprop, and the Beech FOs can only upgrade to the RJ or the Beech.

Wow, that sucks. I guess Jonny O has to keep his training costs down.....but you'd think he could pay you guys a little more in exchange....oh wait, this is jonny O we're talking about.

48 newhire FO's get to live in NY near JFK?

How many Mesa FO's can you fit into one crash pad?

The thing about a job is, it's nice for it to make a person at least break even on living expenses.

That's a necessity, not a nicety. No company is doing you any favors paying you only a "liveable" wage.

Oh, I forgot to mention. This Freedom is NOT the same as Freedom "A" from a few years back. None of these guys, just like none of the Freedom A types, are scabs, and should not be called such.

There are still some idiots in this industry calling them such on the radio. Quite the display of immaturity and stupidity.
