Forest Service Fire Patrol

I am looking for some information on fire patrol and how to get on with the U.S. Forest Service or BLM doing fire patrol. I know that you have to have some experience in wildland fire suppression but I am not sure how to go about doing that. If anyone has any information the subject I would appreciate it.

I applied for it a month ago, but I'm in the same boat as you, I have no clue how to get previous experience.

Good luck.

A couple of on-line resources to look at. One is the Interagency Aviation Training (www.IAT.gov)

Here is the pilot practical requirements for BLM & other federal fire agencies.....

http://amd.nbc.gov/library/handbooks/IAPracticalTestStandards.pdf

Some aircraft are contracted for as needed use, this includes Cessna 182's and light twins like the Cessna 337. Those contractors are listed in another area of USFS aviation stuff on-line.

I've posted enough here to get you started.

Hey guys, here's how you get experience...

and this is terrible I know...

But in my experience, most fire patrol outfits are non-paying time-builders... well the ones I've come across anyways. For example, anyone near the TUlsa area can go to KRVS and contact Jim Bohmer about flying fire patrol for him. He has a contract with the state or county or some agency and has a fleet of 172s(that smell like fire, seriously) and he uses kids wanting to time-build as his pilots. Doesn't pay, but gets experience. I've never done it because I had a paying way of building time.

Don't flame, I was just giving a recommendation on how to get the experience.
