Foreign Pilots

I just wanted to ask a question to other CFI's who have experience training Chinese/Japenese/ or Indian students... How long does it take for you to typically solo them? How long does it take for them to finish their PPL?

I am currently working with some foreign students, and I find that if they have poor english skills, it can make their total time increase quite a bit. We train out of a towered field as well, with lots of T6 and T1 military traffic in the pattern. I have a new student that is about ready to solo, but he probably is at 40 hours dual atm. I also imagine that the cross-country phase will take a little longer than ususal, so by my estimates, he will probably be at 70 or 80 hours total time when he goes for his private.

I think that this is very legitimate, and considering his english, a sort of little miracle. :) My flight school on the other hand in not happy with this. While I was never told "you have to finish him in X hours", I constantly get the "we finish all our 141 students in 35 hours, and 61 in 40 to 45." I think my boss is afraid that other schools finish these foreign students in this amount of time, and if we don't, we could lose potential clients.

So what do your students take on average? Foreign or US. I heard the average is 55 hours for American pilots, but I just wanted to see what was going on at other schools in the US.

Thanks in advance.

I've even had foreign students for advanced ratings take longer than the domestic student average because of language issues. It's perfectly normal... not that I would expect flight school management to understand reality :D

Not a CFI yet, but I can say thats not bad for an international student who practically has to learn a new language. As an "english" speaker, I still think ATC phraseology is a language within itself, at least thats what it felt like.

As one of your former students, I wouldn't doubt your judgement for one minute. Your a rational thinker and you always know what's best.

Have your boss handle the solo endorsements ;)

I had a lot of experience with Indian students. Solo was averaged about 20 hours, though a few got around 15, one of mine soloed at 10 but he was really good.

Private usually about 70-100 hours. These students had to have a certain amount of total time anyway, so there was no real rush to push them out of the nest (PPL checkride) until I was positive they would pass.
