Ever hear anything good about Payson, AZ up there to the NE on Hwy 87? Looks like a quaint mountain town with reasonable home prices.

We're desperatly seeking a good place to live within 2 hrs. of a SWA domicile!

Looking at flightinfo.com, Flight Training International is advertising a "sale" for 737 types at www.fti737.com. They're quoting $5995.

Not that you're gonna go lining up for a thousand dollars difference, but if you're serious about it, every little bit helps.

Payson is about a hour and a half drive I think. It's cooler there and is a small town if you are looking for that type of atmosphere. You'll even get snow in the winter time! The airport there is interesting too, the runway has a nasty slope to it.

It's beautiful up there, just beware of summer and fire season. I'm from the Show Low area, which is about 1.5 hours ENE of there. It's beautiful country, but very, very dry. My family has come very close to loosing thier house, especially during the Rodeo-Chedisky fire.

Darnit... you got me missing home again!

(Stinkin Florida!)

Take a vacation up in the area, you might get a good feel of what it's like. Don't leave out Show Low and Pinetop! It's 4 hours from Phoenix, but still, a really nice place.

Why not just live in PHX or a suburb. The cost of living here is very reasonable.

And I have heard that PHX has the no.#1 housing market in the country.

Kudos if you get hired with SWA but I have heard from people who work for SWA that PHX is a very senior base.

Lastly any reason you prefer SWA over Delta mainline?

mmm. . . maybe because they're actually hiring??

Not a real fan of Phoenix. Hoping for a milder climate up in the hills!

I lived in Mesa while I was going to ATP. Even from only a few miles away during peak hours I-17, HWY 60 E and the 101 are so slow it could take up to two hours to get to Sky Harbor. Mesa is really cheap and Tempe isn't too bad as far as housing goes. It might be a little cooled up North but trying to come down from the mountains can be bear during peak hours. Regardless, it's a dry heat. Good luck with Southwest. I would love to end up there.

And that is reason alone to try for PHX over MCO.

You could probably hold MCO right out of training, though. BWI and probably OAK as well.

Payson is nice, but the only thing I'd be afraid of is the annual fire season in the pines. Pretty nasty bark beetle infestation hit the ponderosa's pretty hard.

I hear OAK is the most junior base....right up my alley!!!

Dude, looks like Mesa might be opening a base at BNA. IF I can get into PACE, and IF I can get on with Mesa, and IF they are still flying out of there, I'm shooting for that. It's not too far from my parents, and if I can't commute on a plane, I can drive. Not that I WANT to drive from Memphis.....

I would play it safe and wait till you know where your base will be, before you pluck some cash down to buy a house in AZ. But, you could be like Doug and commute the long distance. Mtsu, I'm with you, if Mesa were to open a base at BNA, I'd jump on the Mesa wagon too. I love Nasville and the scenery is really beautiful. Most of my dad's side of the family lives in the area. So it would be a great base. They're probably going to base as United Express.

SWA bases... junior to senior.

junior as a baby
OAK
BWI

kind of junior
PHX
MDW

pretty senior stuff...
MCO
HOU

VERY senior
DAL

got that info from flight info.
