For the new hires...

The location is somewhere in a manual and marked with a location like "A 38" or LCON-9? ;)

Bus drivers DO NOT.....

-do a weight and balance before each flight

Fill in boxes with numbers and do some simple addition. Sometimes a computer does it all for you and you just look at the result. Real hard.

supercell86 said:
-load an FMS

Pushing buttons for one minute. Real hard.

supercell86 said:
-kill a small tree everytime they get a "flight relase"

Not sure what this is supposed to say about bus drivers OR pilots. Big freaking deal.

supercell86 said:
-brief pax

FA does that.

supercell86 said:
-wear professinol cloths

Seems to me that most bus drivers wear a uniform too.

supercell86 said:
-deal with VERY complex systems

Ha, half the pilots probably don't even understand the systems. The ones that do don't think it's that hard.

supercell86 said:
-care what the hell the wind or ceiling or visibility is

This MIGHT be the only valid point you have.

supercell86 said:
-do not do a huge fuel calculation or preflight inspection....for the most part

Huge fuel calculation: Does the fuel onboard equal the release fuel? That's the extent of the "huge fuel calculation". Preflight inspection? Wander around the airplane and make sure nothing is broken. Big freaking deal. BTW, bus drivers DO a "predrive" inspection.

supercell86 said:
-have to worry about a bunch of different complex human factors up at flight level 390 or any flight level for that matter

Most pilots don't give it a second thought out on the line.

I'm not saying pilots are overpaid, or bus drivers are overpaid, but don't make it out to be something it's not. Flying an airplane is NOT hard.

Bus drivers usually have to pay to get trained just as most truck drivers have to pay to get trained. My friend just started driving trucks a few months ago and he makes about $800 bucks a week starting out.

How often is he home though? I amde about that much when I was a truck driver, but I was only home every 2 months for 4 days, not to mention if you come home your not being paid. I would gauruntee you there is alot of unpaid time doing it, plus your not paid by the hour(for the most part) your paid by the mile. Think before saying a job like that is easy........

WHere is KSLI? the safest move would be to do what that bird is doing in your avatar. ATC would be a solid career.

It is Los Alamitos Army Airfield in southern California. I'm currently a controller with the love of flying, just don't know if I want it that bad. I've thought about staying in ATC but we shall see.

Ok smart guy......listen basically my point is that being an airline pilot is a much harder job.....and the training is MUCH MUCH MUCH MUCH harder.....and guess what? I'm gonna be THAT pilot that is always thinking about human factors.....training to be a pilot is so much more rigorous than a bus driver....from the time you get your PPL, inst, etc, all the way to the interview and the First officer training......and did I mention that a bus driver probably does not care to much about hmmm......V1 cuts, decompression, i dunno 900 other things that could go wrong in the air.....
FA does that. And then my BIGGER point is that you should learn to feel so much better about yourself if your a pilot....because thats all that matters, what you think of yourself, not what others think.....and i dunno bout you, but i would feel a hell of alot better knowing that i was a pilot than a bus driver.....but thats just me......its what you put into your life

Can't speak for anyone else, but how I feel about myself has nothing to do with what I do for a living. Flying airplanes is what I do, not what I am.

I would be the same person, and be just as fulfilled and happy, if I was a bus driver instead of a pilot.

I love flying, but I do not depend on it for my personal happiness.

ill tell ya whats wrong with the picture......one person drives at approximatley sea level, at 60 mph, and the other flies Flight level 390, going mach .82

FYI- flying can be a bit more dangerous, just in case you havent figured it out.....

When I think of a bus driver, the picture I get in my mind is a driver who operates a charter, or tour bus. These types of drivers are professional in every sense of the word. They in fact do wear professional clothes and they certainly must conduct a pre-trip inspection before, and during their time on duty. Bus drivers command a high salary, but not as much money as a tractor trailer driver who hauls hazmat. When I worked for Amerada Hess Co. I made an average of $1,400.00 per week hauling petroleum products. Believe me when I say you are ten times as safe in a airliner than you are in a tractor trailer hauling gasoline.

I will say this though. If you have an accident with a gasoliner tanker, you will most likely die. If you have a accident in an airliner, you stand a small chance to survive.

At the end of the day a job is a job. Be satisfied that you are getting something done. The view from your desk as a pilot is a heck of a lot better then some CPAs, but I hear they have a whole lot more options as where to take their lunch break. It's great you feel like that now, but remember that when you get there, there is a whole lot more to this job then just the flying. Sure you can feel good about yourself for making it as a pilot, but your job really is no more or less important the the bus drivers. In fact, when bus drivers go on strike whole cities shut down. When pilots go on strike people either book on other airlines or managment pilots step in and keep the flying going.

Fly in the military reserves/guard. That way you can work as little as you want at you airline/cargo job.

you know, my buddy said to me today...."i went to the airport the other day to look at the planes, and it amazed me that several cars would come and go to watch the airplanes" It then occured to me that not too many people go down to the local bus station and watch the busses come and go.....atleast not many people, lol. Theres just something to be said about that, I know a job is a job....but theres something special about being a pilot.....even though it is just a job.....ALL i am saying is that its kinda neat......so enjoy it, and enough with the complaining.....

As you stated in your own post, people come to watch the planes. They don't come sit in front of the terminal and watch the pilots come and go. It is their interest in the machine, not the man that captures their attention.

I don't know... there was this really creepy guy sitting next to employee parking one time.

My point was that your flying the thing they are watching...which personally makes me feel important, kinda like ud feel awsome if u drove a corvette(because people stare at them)...... ive posted about 15 replys here....i give up, so you know what??? be bus drivers, all of you.......omg

Nobody is questioning your excitment about being a pilot someday. It's just that we see (well, I see anyways) too many pilots that thing they are da bomb digity just because the have three or four (or two!) stripes on their shoulder. It *IS* a position that does get respect. People generally are impressed about the fact that pilots can take a metel object and not only get it off the ground but also get it back down on the ground again. Cessna drivers do the same thing in less formal clothing all the time, and often have a good time doing it. Sure... I have some pride in the fact that I fly a plane. I just hope that other people are able to have the same pride in their job too. Was that PC enough for everyone?

Pilots are only cool to other pilots and kids.

But largely, people want to complain to you about their frequent flyer status rather than bow to the epaulet god.

Chicks dig pilots, but they dig fighter pilots.
