hello there i want to go to flight school myself and am currently in the military, does anybody know if i can use my tuition assistance or if i have to wait five or so more years for me to us my gi bill? any info is much appreciated

I believe you can start using GI bill after 2 years in the service, the tuition assistance will cover ground school and not flight. The GI bill will cover the flight training beyond private, for private you're on your own. The flight school also has to be part 141 and VA approved.

Skdz, I am currently active duty and deploying next week for my third and last time to Iraq. I get out when we get back and will be moving to St. Petersburg, FL to go to a part 141 flight school. Can you explain they way you started using your GI Bill and how they whole thing works? Do you get a loan and pay for the training and then when the GI bIll starts paying their half you just send in that towards the loan or what? Thanks

I'm only about to start using it for my flight training. But, the way it goes is...yes, you get a loan and pay for your training and VA pays 60% of the "approved costs." and as far as I know they pay it all at once with probably a few months delay depending on the workload they have. The flight school has to be part 141 with training courses approved by the VA.
Before you start using GI BIll you will have to go online and fill out an application to use the VA benefits and send it to VA regional office (you will find out which one after completing the application) They will send you some letter of certification back that needs to be signed by your college office. That letter with a signature goes back to them, I think one copy also goes to your flight school. Anyway, the flight school is supposed to have a VA certifying official who sends some form to VA saying how much money you have spent on the training and VA reimburses you for 60% of that.
It seems complicated, but that's life I guess...

all at once means whatever you spend during each month you get reimbursed 60% for that month.

There's plenty of great info here... I know it was stated in the earlier post, but just remember, once you complete the online application (VONAP) you MUST electronically SUBMIT it then PRINT it and SIGN it and MAIL it (with your DD214/discharge papers if applicable). Meaning, you cannot just submit it online only.
It will take maybe a month or so to get the confirmation letter in the mail. It will state approval or denial of your application as well as the infamous "pink slip" which is a form to appeal the VA's initial decision.
