Flying with Infants - Ear Protection

Need your help.

I have a six month old that I am going to take for a spin in my Mooney. I need something to help with the noise. I have looked for a headset and other ear protection devices but nothing really stands out.

Any recommendations?

It doesn't need to be an aviation headset, just some sort of good ear protection.

I took my two, 8-month olds from Texas to Michigan in an arrow last year. I took foam ear plug hearing protectors and cut them in half longitudinally, put them in their ears and used medical tape to keep them in place. I kept the cabin cool, climbed and descended slowly, and they didn't seem to mind.

They both fit really well in the baggage area.

Joking... car seats, car seats, car seats.

I don't recommend spinning a Mooney with a six month old.... :D Sorry, couldn't resist!

Anyway, thanks MQ...I have a 15 month old, and those look like a nice, inexpensive option.

I agree whole-heartedly!! I always put my daughter in a car seat when flying, both privately and commercially. People were looking at me like I was from Mars when I got aboard an airliner recently with a car seat strapped to my back, but it was worth it! It may cost more to buy an extra seat, but I also know there's no way my wife or I could hold on to her if anything were to happen...severe turbulence could turn into a disaster. Besides she's happier (and, I imagine, so are surrounding passengers) with her own space.

Car seats. Car seats. Car seats!!!!!

My kids haven't flown much, but every time they've been in a plane (of any size) they've been in an approved child restraint. Most auto booster-type seats are not FAA approved, however, by the time they're old enough to be using one of those, they're fine in a plane in a seat.

My 1st 15 years in a airplane we did not wear headsets. Adults or kids. We used the hand mic and overhead speaker.

Good for you for thinking of ear protection. I spent much of my youth in the right seat of a cabin Waco, with the window rolled down, or in the front cockpit of an open Waco with no ear protection at all - it is really, really important to protect the ears.

Indeed.

Thanks to my years of exposure at Eagle, at age 31 I was told I had the hearing of an average 60 year old.

Exposure-related hearing loss is preventable. So prevent it!

your local audiologist can make custom ear molds, which are the least traumatic to the kids, but as you know they are growing so fast, that they don't fit for long.

Go to the gun store and you can get a "do it yourself" version for much cheaper.

Glad to see you joined JC, I've always enjoyed your videos on youtube.

Thanks. For almost a year I've been seeing traffic coming from this site to my site. Finally decided to check it out and it's NOT all jet jocks like the URL suggests.
