Flying With a Nine Month Old

The wife and I are flying with our 9 month old daughter from ONT to BNA with a no plane change stop in DEN. Any tips? We just took her to Disneyland for the first time and she was the happiest kid there. She made it through It's a Small World and numerous other rides with all smiles so Im assuming minus the pressure changes during altitude she should be ok. Has anyone given their children Baby Benadryl? Thanks

First of all, if she cries, don't worry about the people around you. I have found most people are EXTREMELY helpful, so don't worry about that one person giving you a dirty look.

We have always fed (bottle or breast) our kids on climb out and during descent to help with the ear pressurization issues. We have only had issues with ears once or twice. We have never used Benadryl to knock out our kids. They usually fall asleep once we are in cruise flight.

Get off the plane in Denver to stretch the old legs and get some fresh air. That is a long time to be cooped up in a small place with a 9 month old.

Lastly, try to snag the bulkhead seats. They are the best with kids who are somewhat mobile.

My recommendation is buy the kid his/her own seat, last row, and then you and your wife request seats in the first row.

That is best case scenario. And if you can pull it off, continually complain to the FA's about the crying baby in the back of the plane.....

We traveled with our six-month-old a few times recently and it went well. The only thing I found difficult was changing a full diaper in a CRJ bathroom. Difficult, but still possible.

I found keeping my daughter up (went BUF to MCO when she was 18 months) past her nap time made her sleep pretty much wheels up to wheels down. Other then that I would say bring stuff that will keep her occupied.

If you've never given the baby Benadryl before, don't do it for the first time on the plane. Antihistamines have a common possible side effect of drowsiness, but they ALSO have the possible side effect of hyperactivity. Unless you know how your kid reacts to a drug, don't test it out for the first time on a plane.

Please get the baby her own seat and use a carseat. It can be exhausting to have to hold a wiggly baby for an ENTIRE flight (or 2). Babies are used to their carseats, and they find it a comforting, familiar place to be. It also keeps them confined and restrained.

Ah yes, I forgot to comment on this. My son basically turns into the Great Cornholio (Beavis and Butthead) when on Benadryl.
