Flying RC aircraft

My wife bought be a quadcopter for my birthday, and while I have had some fun flying it, doing a little research has me worried, and I have a few questions.

1. What jurisdiction does the FAA have when it comes to low level flying RC aircraft?
2. Are there any situations where my pilot/instructor certificates could be in jeopardy if something goes wrong while I am flying one of these?

This is what I have found so far:

FPV or Line of sight? Just be smart with it, don't fly near airports people or aircraft, and it's all good. Not an attorney, just a hobbyist.

Don't fly it areas of private residences or other places where people have a reasonable expectation of privacy.

The decisions on final locations of take into account a number of other factors, including security, licensing, facilities. Private residences and airport increases the risk of having the monitor.
