flying or non-flying dilemma

I am currently going to school and majoring in business management. I have been looking for internships with different airlines. However, 90% of them require any aviation related degree. Obviously, that is not me. so here is my dilemma. My dad says any work experience will help me get a job at the airlines. However, he knows little about the industry. I said, the airlines just care about aviation related work experience and total hours and the type of hours.

Should I just worry about getting an airline flight ops internship or go after an internship that deals with management and has nothing to do with flying.

I want to fly 121. Do the airlines care how much non-flying job experience one has or do they just care about total hours and the type of hours and any other aviation related experience? I do not want to throw away any time-building time doing an internship that is not going to help me get a flying job.

I may be wrong in my reasoning so that is why I am asking you guys/gals. If I am worng...PLEASE tell me.

When hiring picks back up again, get a job as a rampie or a gate agent for an airline. I would argue that this could be more valuable than getting an internship, especially if you work for that airline long term.

And also, you get paid.

The pay part is what im concerned about as well. If I go for an unpaid internship at an airline....I have no income to keep me training. That means that I dont get the flight time.

You don't even really have to wait until hiring picks up again to get your foot in the door as a ramper. Piedmont was picking up ground stations and getting a bunch of new rampers and gate agents all while furloughing pilots.:(

Southwest was interviewing for rampies at several cities too. Not sure where you're located but that may be something to look into. Now that's a company you wanna get your foot in the door with!
