Flying into Dallas/Love?

Just go to Dallas Executive, RBD. They aren't busy at all, and have full radar services. It is just a few minutes drive from Love, so your buddy shouldn't have a problem getting there.

Go to KADS. Landmark aviation, give them your ETA and reserve a car. KADS would be a lot more convenient.
:yeahthat:

ADS is much easier for GA and just a stones throw from DAL anyway.

EDIT: If you are just wanting to go to love....I'll give ya a little secret way of getting an overflight anytime of the day:
Take off from ADS, tell ADS ground you want the "love transition" to GKY. You then fly direct Love at 1500' MSL and will get handed off to Love approach on an unpublished freq of 126.05. Fly down runway 18-36 and then direct GKY. This is a traffic watch thing so be sure you have a good GPS and sectional.

I will back ADS or RBD as well, and if you are planning on going east of the city anyways, TKI.

I've flown into DAL in an experimental and the reaction from the tower was one of confusion that an experimental would be coming to his airport (... "this love field?") then just instructions.

I'm going to go against the crowd and say go in to Love. ADS is a pain in the ass, and this from a guy who based there for 2.5 years and knows the tricks. ADS sucks.

ADS is nice, but if Love is closer, then go there.

You'll deal with the same traffic and ATC either way.

Good point.
I went and bought my sectional and TAC today and am going to plan it out tonight or tommorow.
I saw ADS had courtesy cars which seemed cool that way I can drive and meet my friend but then I saw somewhere online that all the tollways are now electronic/automatic. As in you HAVE to have the EZ TAG if using the tollway. What is that about? Anyone shed some light on that?

If you don't have an EZ tag, they just snap a pic send a bill to the registered owner for that toll.

Only the George Bush is all-electronic. The Dallas Tollway still has cash collection.

If you stay around ADS you'll still need cash to do the tollway if you don't have one of the transponders.

I wonder if they (NTTA) tallked to the rental car agencies about all-electronic toll collection. If you don't have a tag, you just get a bill in the mail. So I imagine the rental car agencies are getting lots of bills for the drivers using the Bush tollway.

As to which airport you want to fly into - which airport is easiest for your friend to get to? Since you're coming from the south, RBD may be the easiest for you fly into, but your friend may feel a bit uneasy driving through Oak Cliff/South Dallas to get to the airport (not that there is anything wrong with Oak Cliff/South Dallas.)

I'll sort of second the above about ADS being a pain in bottom. If you haven't been there ADS can be a REAL pain to find. Hell even with a GPS it can be tricky. Heard this exchange a few times...

ATC " Cessna 123 report field in sight make straight in 15"
Pilot "ummm"
ATC "Cessna 123 do you have field in sight?"
Pilot "ummm"

Paraphrasing a bit, but the point is the same...it's hard to find.

The plus side is you won't feel like a tool when you hear "Southwest 354 cleared to land, number 2 behind cessna"

As a pilot and controller for the east side of DFW airspace. Love is not hard to fly into as a C172. Done it a few times, yes keep your speed up on the approach. If you dont really like to keep your speed up on approach, I recommend going into ADS. ADS is busy but lots of smaller GA. RBD is not that busy if you dont want to be delayed that much. I have been delayed at DAL for 25 min for takeoff, if your the slowest thing to takeoff, guess where they put you? Oh, we put GA on the north runway 13L/31R, unless requested.

If flying into love, expect to call lots of traffic in sight (helps you get in faster). Please, Please, Please keep up with the radio calls those sectors are two of the busiest we have, at times. We like to keep the slow guys low when they come into the airspace (no where else to put you really). So if your coming during the middle of the day expect to be bumped around. Its not that bad, and if you need help just ask.

Have fun, and fly safe

For what it's worth we took the 210 out of kdal this morning. No issues, but stay on your game of course. Bunch of fbo's there too, and I'm pretty sure I saw an arrow parked.

There's my .02

DAL? it's a ghost town half the time I fly in there. Southwest might come in every 5-10 minutes but that's about it.

did it with 2 172's going to pick up our mechanic at the FBO.

be courteous, confident, and CONCISE with your radio call, let approach know EXACTLY what you want to do, convey confidence that youre not gonna goof the system.

i had no problems. made a straight for the numbers approach, turned final about 100 feet from the threshold and exited ASAP.

squeeze it in inbetween the 73's!!

the FBO didnt charge us a dime either, probably because they thought we were crazy.

go for it. dont screw up.

Decided on KADS. Line service and office staff were awesome. Great facility, only downside was the gas price. But they were still the cheapest on teh field. They had a courtesy car all lined up for me to go in case my friend got lost/couldn't make it.
Didn't get vectored around Dallas near as much as I thought I would have. Pretty much came in on the south side of the Bravo, dropped from 65 to 35 to get under the shelf and transitioned along the outer section of the Bravo. Then once I got sort of close to Mesquite they cleared me direct ADS over White Rock lake.
Only thing out of the ordinary was staying high, 2500 until midfield downwind. TPA is 1600 there (1000 AGL). Im used to a TPA of 600.
