Flying in Austalia

Does anybody know much about flying jobs in Australia? Both my girlfriend and i have interest in possibly living there if things worked out.

A flying job? Are you a citizen?
Most of the people I know from there have had to take jobs overseas since there aren't enough to go around and the mins are pretty high.
 
not a citizen, i have heard its a bit of a pain to conver licenses to there. REX is the only company i've heard about picking up people. minimums are 800TT

I'm actually an Australian, living in Australia, but also hold a US citizenship as well. Yes converting the licence is an issue, I believe you have to re-sit a bunch of tests and do a fair bit of extra flying as well. And then once you have converted to an Aussie CPL, the mins for jobs are quite competitive and I think they'll take preference to pilots who have learnt to fly within Australia.

Most fresh CPL holders in Australia go up north or extreme remote areas on the hope that they'll stumble across any flying job they can find to get their hours up. I have friends up north that are CPL holders but work as bartenders or supermarket packers as they just haven't found jobs yet.

I've been thinking for a long time about getting all my ratings and pursuing aviation as a career (currently only a student licence) and it's easier and cheaper for me to do it in the states.

The downfall with this plan though is I do love Australia and would love to fly here one day down the track, so if I get my training in the states I too will have to go through all the conversions to fly here.
 
Your biggest problem would be citizenship. I suppose if you find an employer they could sponsor you as long as you worked there. But given the economy there aren't really any employers out there looking for expats just yet. And you really can't move over there as a pilot first, THEN try to find a job because pilot scores 0 pilots on their skilled occupation list: http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/pdf/1121i.pdf

They update the list every year (?) I think. Only reason I know this is I have looked at it myself, Australia is a great place!

Couldn't help but notice that a bricklayer scores more points than a pilot...
