In my situation, the legal was not an issue. Having the ability to find info on my own quickly paid dividends.

It's surprising how many people are so against adding to their SA bag with a small 1 lb book that's 6 inches long by 4 inches or so wide and less than a half inch thick, and cheap cost to boot. Again, you're not unsafe without it, but the abject animosity against it here is surprising.

In aviation, never say never, and never say always. It usually depends.

As I've always said: Anything and Everything can happen at any given time, with or without prior notice.

Yes, I agree it depends on your "mission", so to speak. We're part 91 and fly a small jet all over the midwest, northeast, and southeast on a regular basis, with occasional trips out west as well. So we'd have to get all the AFDs covering the lower 48, and hey let's throw in all the VFR charts too!

Now we have too much junk to even move around in our "paperless" cockpit that already has a bunch of paper manuals, enroute charts, area charts, etc. in it. This is in addition to our Blackberries, iPhones, etc. with fltplan.com Flt Deck software and whatever else. We also print out all NOTAMs from fltplan.com in addition to printing out any pertinent airport information from fltplan.com's "Airport Info" page that come from the FAA. We also have a backup labtop with JeppView. I'm fairly confident that we've covered our bases without the use of AFDs and VFR charts.

Now, if I'm flying around VFR in a small geographical area, I'm all for having the AFD and I required its use by my students. They aren't going to have the Jeppesen data to make informative decisions in the case of a divert. Also, if I were regularly operating in mountainous areas IFR, I would want current VFR charts for those areas on board. When we go out west, we typically do have them.
