FLL/MIA area living

Hey everyone. I know some of you live down in the south FL area, so maybe you can help me out some. I'm planning on relocating to somewhere in between Miami and Ft. Lauderdale, so that I can commute to San Juan until I'm senior enough to hold Miami (a few months probably). I'd like to live near the beach, and in a non-ghetto neighborhood preferably (

) without spending my entire salary on rent (if thats even possible). Any tips on decent areas? I want to be able to drive to both FLL and MIA so I have more options for commuting, since there are several flights a day from both of them to SJU.

Any help would be appreciated...thanks!

Great to see your joining us down here.:) I don't really like any places from Ft. Lauderdale to Miami. But right over Ft. Lauderdale there are some nice places like Coral Springs, Coconut Creek, Pompano Beach. FLL is 15 from these places and MIA is 30min. I think Sawgrass might be a nice place too if you like alligators.

When all else fails commuting, don't forget us freight dogs! Tradewinds has a nightly A300 that does MIA-SJU... Leaves around 1AM...They have 6 jumpseats. If you want the dispatch number let me know, I'll get it from my buddy there.

And as far as living in FLL/MIA, I lived in Weston for a year and loved it, kinda pricey, but very nice. Sawgrass is nice as well as Miramar/Pembroke Pines. I commuted from Weston to MIA and never had more than a 40 minute drive in traffic. I-75 never gets backed up like I-95. The Palmetto is a different story though, but you can shoot over to LeJune and go south from there if it gets really packed.

I can't believe newhires are even getting near MIA! 2 years ago it was the crystal palace, they had 7-8 year FO's!

I don't know too much about the south florida area.. but my grandparents used to live in Pompano Beach... and I have cousins that live in the Davies area... getting near the beach without busting your entire salary will be pretty darn difficult (just like any beach)....

As long as you are moving, why not just move to SJU.

You'll have to move again when you get a new base anyway.

Tip: Moving to the most junior base in the company is usually safe.

I'm from the palm beach area, and prices are comparable throughout south fla. I'm not sure what equipment you fly, but chances are on a F/O salary for a regional you're going to have a tough time finding anything east of I-95 in the non ghetto at a price you can pay. However, there are some very nice places farther west in the Pembrooke Pines/Coral Springs area that you are sure to afford. These areas are newer, and much cheaper than you will find anywhere east--and about a 30min-1hr commute from fll/mia (depending on traffic of course). Does palm beach have any flights to san juan?? If so, you may want to check us out...It's MUCH nicer up here!

Yeah. Coral Springs, Coconut Creek, Deerfield Beach, Pompano Beach are all nice areas. They are getting better and better as they are just beggining to grow.

Thanks for the help guys. Looks like I won't need a place in Miami anymore, at least not right away...just a crashpad.

When I first started training, I put in a preference bid for Miami just for the heck of it. Well, to my surprise, I was awarded it today. Its kind of a fluke, because there was a big gap in ATR F/O's hired into SJU over the summer so when the vacancy bid opened up for 5 MIA F/O's, there weren't too many who wanted it that hadn't already gotten it. Now that there's a regular flow into SJU again, Miami probably won't be junior for long. I'll still get to probably do some flying in the Caribbean...either during IOE, doing TDY sometime, or due to the ever-present possibility of getting displaced.

Anyways, thats my quick update. Thanks again for the help.

P.S.- Anyone know of crashpads available in MIA?
