That sucks, man. Sorry to hear that. Did you apply to Sierra yet? A one year contract with them isn't really too bad honestly. Plus I think the pay might be higher there too, IIRC.
Yes I did. And I was offered the deal. However, it would be tough for me to relocate to that area with my wife.

I have family in Denver that I can rent a studio from if I worked for lakes :)

It's sad...but it really seems like lakes will be my best option. At least I do not need much money. No home loan. No car payment. Student loans in deferment for a while. And even though lakes pays $16ish per hour and 75 guaranteed hours, most pilots I've talked to are flying closer to 100hrs per month due to them being short pilots. And the way it works is all over time pay for the above 75 mark. So take home pay is closer to $1800 after tax according to a guy I know there.

Ah, well that puts things in a new light. One way or another you have to do what you have to do. If GLA is the best option for you, then go for it. Good luck and hopefully everything works out.:)

Thanks. Same to you. I'm still exploring options. I would really like to get my cfi. And I plan to when I can afford it. But the wife has options in Denver for good income work. So if I can tough it out at lakes for a year or so then maybe it will be worth it. I only have an interview though...so that option may even fall through lol. Although, I couldn't imagine it would take much to impress lakes nowadays haha.

You also get 1000tt right? I don't have a degree from an "aviation" institutions haha. That's good for you though. X country time is harder to get for low timers

Oh I've got the 500 hrs XC. I busted my balls to get it instructing and two weeks later they changed it to the new reduced minimums.

@Cloud Surfer oh ok cool, let me know what you decide, I may see you down there. My worse fear is washing out of stands honestly.

Washing out of Standardization shouldn't be a concern. I was a IP/Check Airman at FSI years ago and found the standards flights to be very straightforward. There is nothing they are looking for that you haven't already demonstrated during your CFI ride. If there are deficiencies, it isn't a one strike rule, generally a couple training flights to iron out the wrinkles and you are good to go. I found FSI to be a great stepping stone when I was there. I was able to build several hundred hours of multi time in a short period of time, and never had to worry about the airworthiness of the aircraft.

FSA is a great CFI gig. The acft are old but very well maintained. The shady guy that ran the place while I was there, DG, is gone.

Try to push for "full time" status right out of the gate, if they won't give it get it as soon as possible. It comes with paid vacation, sick time, decent health insurance etc etc.

If you already have some dual given try to get into one of the European programs, lots of cross country and more pay.

The FSI centers across the country love hiring FSA CFIs into their right seat programs where you get a full PIC type and invaluable networking opportunities.

I had a couple other CFI jobs before I went down to Vero and FSA was far and away better than the others. I was there for 3+ years and actually left on not great terms but that was due to the above mentioned shady character that was running the place.

I'm not sure if they still have this but while I was there they had a point system based on how much dual given you had at FSA. They used it to try to retain CFIs because everyone was leaving for regionals. Basically you turned in "points" for type ratings. ANY type rating from a Mustang to a G650. Again, not sure if they still have this but its worth asking about. The point totals for smaller to mid size jets were not at all unattainable.

In short, go to Flightsafety.

You all got me sold!!!! I think I'll finally be able to apply tonight. I've been working over at both jobs so haven't had the time to. @hcaeborev I heard about the point system. I think it still may be going on which is a great opportunity, and also being hired into their right seat program. I'm not too much looking to take off running at 1500hrs, so I plan on spending some time there especially if I really like it. @rausda27 thanks for that information about standardization. That's very reliving because that was one of my biggest worries. I'll be studying my private stuff especially. That seems to be my weak area while instrument is more of my strong suit.

Just review all the maneuvers, know how to teach them and be sure you know the PTS tolerances. I remember the IP demonstrating a maneuver, then asking me if it was a pass/fail and why. Things may have changed since I was there almost 10 years ago, but I am sure its still a fair process.

@rausda27 Yes i've definitely been studying the maneuvers, @jgheggie I had a buddy text me today about Great Lakes, good luck, I think it'll make a great gig to get some time, and get out of there,I told him I can't do it, from what I see there still isn't any pay during training, unless somethings changed.

Ya it's a tough spot to be in. But I'm still weighing options.
