Flightaware.com Question

GhostRider in the Sky
Where and how does flightaware.com acquire all of the aircraft tracking data? Did they bid and win a contract with the FAA to do what they are currently doing? I cannot think of any other way that they would be able to get that data streamed to themselves. Hopefully someone knows!

I've tried researching this but had no luck at all.

Good question. I was wondering the same thing tonight as I sat at the gate an hour after my shift was supposed to end waiting for the inbound aircraft to stop making shapes over STS and land.

Where is this data from? (Back To Top) FlightAware compiles, aggregates, and processes data from a variety of government sources as well as FlightAware's proprietary flight tracking network. FlightAware's proprietary algorithms calculate delay and arrival time estimates to offer the most up-to-date and reliable flight tracking data on the Internet.

My guess is you will continue to have no luck....:dunno:

Anybody can petition the FAA for radar data. You must abide by certain filters, NBAA, AOPA and others have a no display list out there. Try searching for any military, faa, or some private aircraft out there and you will get that you cannot track them. The data is filtered for military and faa aircraft, then sent to flightaware, helloflight, and other providers. There is anywhere from a 5 to 15 minute delay with the data from those websites.

You can also contact FlightAware and have your aircraft blocked... not just AOPA and NBAA.
