Flight Time Credits question...

I almost did. It wouldn't have been the towns fault though as I never tried to venture out into the city freshman year. I was just homesick as hell. The room mate I had freshman year made all the difference I think. I'm still good friends with him today actually. If I would have had the room mate I had sophomore year, I would have surely left. That was not a livalble situation at all. I moved out into an apartment the November of that year, so that helped. I can't possibly imagine what the rest of the school year would have been like living with that kid.

Ut oh...what happened with that kid? I've heard lots of horror stories of freshman roommates not taking into account that your space is also someone elses.

ahh sorry for the late reply back guys...was working (go FedEx!)

thanks for the opinions from all of you!

To me, i rather wait to get to UND then to get all the licnese/certificates.
Right now, I'm thinking of doing all my knowledge tests first.

Sorry, they won't be valid at UND, you have to take them here to count. :sarcasm:

But you could at least get the Gleims and start studying ;)

Hello, everybody. First post on JC. I found this to be an interesting thread as I am a possible transfer student as well. Right now, I am a freshman at Southern Illinois in Carbondale, enrolled in their flight program. The only reason I'm even really here is because during the second half of my junior and the first half of senior year in high school, I kinda slacked off a bit, and when last December rolled around, I thought it would be a good idea to finally start applying for college. I was actually planning on just going to community college, transferring somewhere after two years, getting a non-aviation degree, and getting my ratings somewhere else. However, then in mid-December, I took a shot in the dark, and actually got accepted into SIU's flight program, so I just "winged it" and here I am.

Yet, I am not that impressed with the place. It's very unorganized, unproffesional, and we're stuck in the late 70s/early 80s as far as technology goes. I had an idea about all of this coming into the place, but now I feel like I could develop into a better pilot elsewhere.

Now, during my junior year in high school, I was actually really set on attending UND, but then kind of lost interest in flight for a little while, after getting completely ripped off at a local FBO. However, now that I'm back in it, I pretty much know that this is what I want to do, and after doing some research I think I'm going to give UND a shot.

I didn't realize that the requirements/application process was so easy. I thought SIUC's was a piece of cake, but after going through with UND's, I think I can get in. I hear how Grand Forks is cold/boring, but it is actually a bigger town the Carbondale, and we have the rednecks and binge drinking (ugh) down here too. Yet, some things that attract me is the fact that your out-of-state tuition is actually cheaper than our in-state down here, and our tuition is still going up to pay for even MORE construction than we already have on campus. Also, the hockey scene sounds really cool up there. We have division 1 sports teams here, but our fans are like Dodgers fans in the sense that they show up late after tailgating, and leave early to go drink some more (not saying the drinking part is Dodger fan-like). I understand that the drinking scene is just typical college, but I feel like here it is the "main event," and that sucks.

Anyways, sorry for the length, but feel free to weigh in on this. I feel like I'm pretty set on my decision, but I want to be careful and also schedule a visit if I do get accepted. Any opinions, good and bad, are accepted. Thanks a ton.

You're going to get a million different opinions of this place, but the bottom line is this: This place, and the time you spend here, is all what you make it to be. Sorry for the cliche, but it's the truth...

Sounds like you'll have a little bit newer aircraft to train with by coming here... :) Say, if you come to take the aerospace tour you can arrange to go up flying (for free) on a short flight with an instructor here. But, it's my understanding that you have to ask for this.

About 105, I took it last summer with about 15 other guys. Overall the ground school is the same as 102 which was worthless since everyone was getting A's. The flying on the otherhand I think was beneficial for me because I didn't know much about XC procedures. But for a 112 student I think it was worthless, they definantly didn't need 10 flights to spark their brians. The cost is suprisingly around the same for both courses which is around 2-4 thousand, I was on the low end somehow. I think it depends on you instructor a lot for this course and any course at UND because it really depends on them if they feel you're ready.

Welcome to JC Chad. If at all possible come take the aerospace tour and check out Grand Forks. It's really not so bad here. :)

The 112 course is a good course, in that you will get the experience needed in flying UND flight ops, because even though you have your pilot certificate does not mean you are good to go. UND flying is kinda different than Part 61 Flying. Avit 112 allows you to get the understanding of UND flight ops and as well as making sure that you are a qualified pilot under UND eyes.

The only thing I learned in 112 was how to get an airplane. :insane:

be as it may, thats the purpose of the course, I also believe there is something about for Part 141 regs.

Hey thank you. I definitely want to make it up there and tour the place. I'm probably going to wait for acceptance first, though. I put my information into their admissions calculator thing, or whatever it is called, and it says that I would be "automatically accepted." However, I noticed that when filling out my application, I accidentally said that I completed 5 credits of social science in high school, when I really completed 3.5, and just counted each semester-long course as 1. I e-mailed admissions, and they haven't responded yet, but I hope they don't hold that against me. I still meet their requirements.
