Flight simulator time for skills proficiency

Overall, which is better for keeping flying skills sharp;

Is it better for a pilot (career/private) to have access to and spend more time training in a full motion training simulator or FTD (frasca),

or

spending more money and fly a cessna 172 or multi engined aircraft to keep flying skills sharp?!

thanks all

Read what you just wrote, and take money out of the equation:

Is it better to fly an airplane or a simulator to keep skills sharp?

Like they say, there's no substitute for the real thing. Simulators are nice for procedures, and simulating things that are too dangerous to do in the real airplane.
