Flight Review

Gents, I'm new to the JC forum so here is a little back ground:

1. I haven't flown in 9 years (last flight June 2001 two weeks before I joined the Army)
2. I have roughly 70-80 hours PPL (172,152) or atleast that is what I think I have I haven't cracked open the log book in........well 9 years

I want to renew my PPL this summer I figure I will need about 5-9.9 hours(I just couldn't justify putting 10 hours) of dual to get back in the swing of thing so here is a couple of questions:

1. Is there an online (preferably free) BFR course that could get me back up to speed with all reg's and basic overview of what I may have lost? I'm currently in Iraq and would like to get a head of the game to cut down on cost with an instructor?

2. Anyone know of a good school in El Paso, TX? Personal thoughts? None of the schools there seem to have websites to look at.

3. Correct me if I'm wrong, need to study part 91 and 61 of the FARs?

4. You can never be affaird to ask question you never know: Any aircraft owners in El Paso here willing to let a Soldier use there aircraft for building hours and banging around the Texas big sky in exchange for a wash, detail, and of course cost of fuel? Looking for a cheaper way to build the hours aren't we all:D

Thanks for the help,
Neal

1. I would just download the PHAK, http://www.faa.gov/library/manuals/aviation/pilot_handbook/

Review airspace, weather minimums, operations, currency, etc... Things like aerodynamics and the like, I wouldn't worry about too much.

2. Blackhawk, a member here, is in El Paso, I believe.

3. In the ASA FAR/AIM, there is a suggested study page in the beginning for private pilot. I suggest going through everything they have listed.

You can sign up at www.faasafety.gov, and look up the online flight review course... It's free, and it helps you with the ground requirement for the flight review.:)

Guys, this is great info thanks for the help. I currently have about 17 months left with the Army and will be leaving the sevice after 10 years in the summer of 2011.

My plans are to attend a cookie cutter course you know one of those to attain a CFII when I leave the service. If all go's well:
1. the VA will pay 60%
2. I am going to work it so that I'm on terminal leave when I do this (full pay from uncle sam while in training):bandit:
3. Start the long and fun road of building time

Psssssstt....(whisper) Don't say 'cookie cutter' course around here. People get crabby when the subject starts on any type of flight school deemed a 'cookie cutter, puppy mill' type of operation. /(whisper)

Welcome to the Forum!!

I say that the link to the FAASTEAM website is a great suggestion. Oh, and the one about the ASA FAR/AIM, that is my personal favorite!

I tell my PPL students to go through list in their ASA FAR/AIM and if they don't have one then I make a copy of it.

And when you get out...welcome back to the civilian world!

You could also look at up a copy of the Private Pilot PTS. It narrows down what is "supposed" to be covered in a BFR but it wouldn't hurt to make sure you are proficient in all the areas covered under the private pilot practical test standards.

Good luck with the return, and believe it or not, you will probably catch back up pretty quick. I think 5-9.9 hours would be a good goal, but you will probably also need to figure in a little ground time with an instructor.

I do, in fact, live in El Paso as someone pointed out. My website is with my signature.
Someone already mentioned the Flight Review course at faasafety.gov. This is a good start. While you are at the site sign up for the wings program.
I would also recommend some of the courses at the AOPA Air Safety Foundation:
http://www.aopa.org/asf/online_courses/
These are also free. In particular I would recommend:
Essential Aerodynamics
Mountain Flying (since you live in El Paso)
Engine and Propeller
Know Before You Go: Navigating Today's Airspace
Weatherwise: Airmass and Fronts
Runway Safety
Download and save the certificates.
Cheapest airplane in El Paso is a Cessna 140 at T27 for $75/hour wet (plus instructor). We can knock out a tail wheel endorsement, get you recurrent and flight review and once. Feel free to call or PM me.

crzy,
Sounds a lot like what I did. Got out of the Army last year just shy of the 10 year mark. Got my ppl and instrument just before I went on terminal leave and went to work on my CSEL while still getting paid.

Used VA bennies at an awesome 141 school, got my CFI/II and am now building my time.

Don't waste your VA benefits going to a major school, find a good FBO and get an instructor and block his schedule for 3 months. Just my .02

BTW the grass isn't always greener but I've been "free" for a year now and do not regret my decision one bit. I do miss the comraderie, but I love civilian life.

I agree with all of the above. Feel free to call me and we can meet to discuss some of your options although I admit I am not totally up on the new GI Bill. Buy me a cup of Starbucks and I'll talk to you for hours.
Some ideas for you near to Ft. Bliss.
Cochise College:

Holloman Aero Club. They are 141 and their rates are VERY low. I think their rate for a 210 is $130 wet. They have a twin, even have a Super Cub for $100/hour. You will not find a better deal anywhere. Something to think about while on terminal leave.

Which camp are you in? I might be able to help with some ground work before you leave if you are at Victory.

I'm down on Adder (Tallil). I was working with another guy down this way who worked as a CFII in FL. We did quite a bit but he's gone now. Thank you for the offer, to bad I can't just take a quick trip up there.

I did not read your initial post well and missed the part about still being deployed.
I don't know what is based at Talil now (last stopped there in 04), but you might think about putting up a sign in base ops. Who knows, a transient crew or some crew based there may have a CFI who will see it and give you some free ground instruction.

Tallil is big, I have been here for about 5 months now out of all my deployments I have never been at a place this big. I don't know how it was back in 04 but I'm guessing it's grown a bit.

I only have about 60 day'ish until I'm back in EP so I'm not going to search for anyone right now, I did work with a guy that gave me quite a bit of ground back in December.

Blackhawk, I will give you a call when I get into town. I like the 10 hour tail wheel endorsment/re-currency/FR all in one. Could we do it all in the 140 to cut down on cost? Also I am going to try and get a medical within the first couple days back anyone you sugguest or who should I stay away from (looking to get a 1st or 2nd class)?

We can do the entire thing in the 140. I have not heard anything bad about any examiners. I will check.
