Flight instructor hiring workshop

honest question here, why would anyone wish to stay in GF any longer than neccessary and instruct here?? is it that difficult to get an instructing job elsewhere?? pay?? benefits??

really curious because so far im busting out of this town as soon as the ink is dry on the diploma....

Believe it or not, there are people who like it here. I never understood why you guys who hate it here so much stay. Nobody really cares if you like it or not.

Some people don't like it here but can wait it out by the benefit of flight instructing... good time building here.

Anyone know the info on the orientation day? , someone told me it was actually thursday, friday and saturday, but I thought he said it was only on thursday the 17th, at 8 am clifford hall, :insane:

Instructing is not about time building, if that is all you are gracing UND with your presence after graduating for, then go elsewhere. We, the industry, need instructors who WANT to instruct and pass on good fundamental skills and discipline.

I'm not saying flight instructing is all about time building. Flight Instructing, Banner Towing, Aerial Photography, etcetera, happens to BE a great time building aviation job. So is time earned in a a regional gig. So is the right seat job in a 747. We all go through stepping stones to get to where we eventually want to be, whether it be flying King Air C90's forever (which would be a pretty cool job as it is), owning a flight school and flight instructing, or flying 737's for Southwest.

If one doesn't want to be a true teacher at heart, then flight instructing indeed is not the route to take. If you don't WANT to instruct or have the capacity to successfully teach a difficult subject, flight instructing is not the way to go. I know that.

This is not all what I'm gracing UND with my presence Dugie. I actually want to teach aviation. I have always had a passion to share knowledge with others and find innovative ways to work around their learning retention/comprehension obstacles. I don't have any hurry to get "that corporate" or "that airline" job because I'd be very comfortable flight instructing part time while continuing my current job I've had for the past 6 years in real estate appraisal. I'm a mirror image of my father in every way as far as interests and personality - My father flight instructed part time for several years while operating his medium sized dental lab. He was very happy doing this as he has a passion to teach. He has a passion to give dental seminars, mentor new dental technicians, and also teach aviation.

I too agree that we need instructors who are both passionate teachers at heart and excellent aviators. But, if one happens to have a goal of moving up to a more challenging aviation job, there is nothing wrong with seeing flight instructing as a stepping stone.

thanks for the comments ill be sure and file that gem away.

ok so far ive gotten a reply from caffiene that he will stay and instruct here because he likes it here, fair enough. any other reasons?

and as for why im staying here despite my intense hatred of this state/city

well lets enumerate some reasons

1) financial. i dont have the resources to get up and move again. also, tuition is relatively cheap here, and i dont have the resources to go pay out of state costs again somewhere new

2) length of program. i looked into OU pretty seriously but due to program structures i would have to spend another 3 or 4 years there as the course structure does not line up very well. i only have 2 more years here.

3) quality of school/instruction/equipment. obviously we have great stuff here.

mind you, if i was a first semester freshman who came here, as opposed to a 70 hour transfer student, i would have promptly got up and left as soon as my first semester was over. however in my situation im ready to just ####in get done with school and get on with my life.

doesnt mean i still cant hate the place while im here.

school/aviation here = good
state/city/everythingelse = bad

so it is just the one day from what you guys understand ?? I just heard it was thurs, fri, and sat. from someone and wanted to makes sure, 'cause i've still got another week at my old job.

I heard it is thurs, fri, and sat.

Has anybody else been assigned students? If so, what courses are you teaching?

It starts for the new hires at 8 am in CH210 on Thursday, August 17th. The rest of the CFI's join in at 1 pm on Thursday. I think the reason for the extra few hours is due to AIMS and Crewlink help (I'm sure there are a couple extra things too).

The fall workshops runs all day Thursday and Friday. Half days on Saturday and Monday.

As for students, I was given two 414's, 221 and a 222.

Congrats to everyone that was hired.

Relax there, Mikey. I don't think any part-timers have been assigned yet, from what I've heard. I should hope they will in the next couple of days, since they're all getting back from the weekend and vacations!

On another note, it's quite nice of them to supply us with epaulets, but I'd appreciate a shirt to go along with it! Pricey buggers, I mean, don't they know we're FLIGHT INSTRUCTORS? I'm gunna be eating ramen for two weeks to afford this shirt! :insane:

hahaha! I got two short sleeve shirts and one long sleeve shirt... something like 77 bucks if i remember correctly! At least the epaulets are free. Oh, and since you're taking MEI with us I thought I’d let you know that you can get the MEI TCO for free at the airport.

got the official word that the workshop will run on thursday, friday, saturday and monday; nothing on sunday. Does anyone know what time it ends each day ?

I would bet 1700 on thursday and friday. Probably less on the weekends. Just a hunch though.

They must have not gotten to the "R" section of the alphabet, cuz I'm still yet to be assigned! Maybe they'll run out of 102's and give me a 415 or something :-D
