Flight Instructing?

Would I be able to find a flight instructing job if I decided to go that route until the airlines start hiring again?? Location not really that important just wondering if there are jobs out there.

There are some, but you have to be careful. Stay away from the ones where you're expected to sit at the airport 10 hours a day, wash your bosses car or do his tax returns for free.

It is a risk, since there are schools shutting their doors.

But as Laura Bush in her 2009 speech, don't be afraid to take risk.

So I am going to lean toward that being a yes. I wouldn't mind being at a airport 10 hrs a day but the other stuff i'd be sure to make sure that stuff wasn't included in the job description lol.

staying at the airport 10 hours a day and not getting paid, will wipe that smile off your face in a heart beat.

I would train at the place where you plan to instruct. As usual there's no guarantee, but your chances are much better when the owner, CFI's and the people know you vs being just another resume.

Yes.

Just understand that it's very competitive. You'll need to have a sharp looking resume, follow up with all of your contacts, dress for success, stop by places in person, get to know the people in charge, etc. There is nothing more ridiculous than getting a resume in the mail from somebody, then not hearing a word of follow-up from them. How bad do they really want a job?

My school might be hiring another CFI this summer and we already have the person in mind who we want. You know the reason this CFI is at the top of the stack? In addition to several other positive traits, she has been stopping by our office, e-mailing the owner of the flight school, and generally making excuses to talk to us for the past six months, long before she even got her CFI ticket. I've never seen anyone be as tenacious as she is in getting a job. That's what it's going to take.

I will keep all of those things in mind.

How do you think us freelance CFI's do it? We make a living off our reputations and our skill level. We have to network, man the couch, and pound the pavement to get students. Those places where you are just given students breed complacency, laziness, and SJS. As a result they often times turn out a sub-par product.

Yes, it is possible to find a CFI job. A few of them crop up here per week. Some of them are reputable outfits, some are certificate mills, and some are just shams. You will have to do your own leg work and it won't be easy. Once you find a job do your level best to fly the paint off of what ever you can. The days of "250 and a pulse" minimums are long gone. When hiring does resume you're going to have to compete with some well qualified guys and gals to get that next job.

Being an actual independant CFI and doing that for your own benefit is different than being in reality an employee and forced to do other work (for free.)

As of right now.. I just got through a decently extensive search for a CFI... there's not much out there right now, mainly because none of the current CFI's are moving to regionals. So now I continue my wait to begin getting paid to fly instead of the other way around, till then on to multi!

I know this will come a shock, but many owners will lie about what the job will be like during the interview.

Anyone out BWI area? I'm moving out there to be with my girl and am looking to instruct in the area.

The school at BWI closed down last year, the two schools at MTN are pretty slow, FDK is slow. I don't know about Lee-Annapolis, but I've heard GAI doesn't have much activity either. I would definitely get resume's in to all those places, but the economy has really affected the level of activity in MD.
