Flight Following

Well, now you guys reminded me of a question I had the other day. I fly VFR on the same route I do several times a week. Is it of any benefit to tell the guy on the final frequency before I would normally switch to tower that I have the airport's ATIS? Or is that strictly an IFR thing?

Come to carbondale sometime and hang out with us! We don't bite too hard!

I love flying into the Dale. The courtesy car is sweet and some of my favorite places to eat are down there. Not to mention I spent 5 years of my life in that town ( I attended Aviation Technologies at SIU). And now I know to monitor 123.3 when in the area. What is this "red water tower" I always hear about? lol

haha yeah we got a cadillac, too bad they never let us do a pizza run in it! That red water tower is actually in murphysboro, and tower usually sends people there to get set up for a downwin for 36L or 18R.

Try to keep the call short and sweet. As a terminal controller we type in callsign, destination, type, and altitude. Pilots who ramble are the only annoying thing about flight following.

We have to verify all departures or arrivals have the pertinent weather and airport information. IFR or VFR doesn't matter.

For us in approach where I am. We only care if you have the ATIS if you are going into our class bravo or Charlie airports if you are VFR. If you are VFR flying into a class D airport, we don't care if you have it or not.
We have to verify that you have the ATIS for all the airports you are flying into if you are IFR.
The first person you talk to in our approach will make sure you have the ATIS for your destination airport.
