Flight Engineer Rating

For all of you current and former f/e's out there. I was thinking about picking this one up and I was wondering what the process is. I know about the written exam, but I also heard that there was a flight portion. That is what I dont understand, as it is more of a systems position then a flying one. So if there is in fact a flight portion what does that include, what would be a good f/e checkride gouge?

Any school you would get this from would give it in a simulator. The F/E is a crwmember an dhas to be proficient at normal and abnormal procedures, hence a simulator and a checkride.

This can be a fairly expensive rating. Are you planning on using it?

I'd love to give it a try for a time. Any ideas of a school that offers it?

You are going to need to find that yourself. Here's the problem. The airplanes that require flight engineers are going away, fast. For those operators still using them, mostly 747s, they like A&P rated people who can also work on the airplane if it breaks away from base.

I think you are a couple decades late on this one. But I could be wrong.

Mom did it at American Flyers at MMU. What part of MD are you from?

From the job posts and websites I've seen there are a lof of small 727 operations out there that look for f/e's and then upgrade them after a certain period.

Columbia Md. Home base KFME

If you think this is a good idea (I don't), I'd say you should find out specifically what schools these airlines recommend and hire from. Try to get an inside track. I don't think there are as many airlines as you think that will hire off the street, low time, F/E's without and A and P and upgrade them to the right seat.

For some reason I thought that one of the crew members on a part 121 flight still had to be a flight engineer turbo jet even if it was the capt or FO? but I might be wrong.

No, if the aircraft is required to have a flight engineer, then either the Capt or FO is required to be qualified (not certified) to perform the duties of the FE, in case the FE is incapacitated.

If the aircraft doesn't need an FO, there's no reg that requires certification as such.

Feedback, anyone?
