Flight Bags

On that note, what is a good flight case with a drink holder (even better 2 of them). And for dude(tte)s who carry a full sized headset, what do you do? I’ve been jamming my headset into my bag, but after having to send it for repair I tried carrying it in the case which is just too much even clipped onto the outside.
 
I need a haircut (well, I think I need a haircut, cc: @Karnage 's observations above re: appearance standards, and Han Solo asking in an indignant tone "WHO'S SCRUFFY-LOOKING") but there just isn't time this week.

Nice thing about going to Hawaii is not needing to take the horse blanket next month, though.

Honestly, after dealing with this exact issue I just stopped carrying my own headset. At my shop, *most* of the guys who carry Bose and CA carry the case on a carabiner attached to some part of the rolling kit. Me? I just use the ship headsets because they're all new. I carry a little pouch of mic muffs and o-rings, and Tech Ops will bring them to the plane if you ask nicely, so it works out easier.

I've actually resigned myself to 2 different bags and it largely depends on the trip and how much I'll need to eat. Since I'm on long call this month, the Brightline is getting used more, since I only pack 1-2 meals in it that I know are going to defrost over time. That amount of time and the trip are what determine it. Longer than a 1-2 day, or something where I don't overnight in DCA, and I'm loading the Strongbags cooler with food and transferring major items (flashlight, shaker bottle, spare eyeglasses, sleep buds, grip strength gadgets, pre-mixed protein shakes) from one to the other. All the little stuff (first aid meds, pens, lanyards, phone chargers, various and sundry bits) exist in both bags all the time.

This is the system that is working out for me. When I hold a line again next month (praise be) I'll alter the equation slightly.

He gave me the “look” when the uniform came on this morning.

Also he’s got two little shaved spots on his front legs from the IVs he was on during surgery and they’re the derpiest cute thing I’ve ever seen (ugh I don’t wanna today).

I just think most GA headsets, in particular the Bose, are gross overkill for jets, and I think ship’s sets are grody enough that I suck it up and carry my DC Pro-X. Which has 6000+ hours on it and has never broken on me. It got new ear pads and a head pad and that’s about that. I think the weight is worth it.

That said, if your ship sets are nice headsets and new (ours are not…not even close) then by all means.

We've got ProX2s. I was suspicious of the ANR quality of an on-ear (vs. full cups or buds) headset but damn if the things aren't very, very good. The 220 is noisier than the 'bus, but quieter than any Embraer product out there.
 
Nah, it’s not really the money. It’s the hassle of researching, waiting for something to show up, trying it out for a trip or 2, finding it’s not quite right, lather rinse repeat, oh and now I’ve got 2 or 3 that don’t work for me that i have to try to sell online, and I just hate that whole consumer process.

Maybe I should look on eBay first.
Glad I'm not the only one, I've probably got 5 of them lying around now, finally settled on a small professional looking backpack that I'm sure will get holes scraped the bottom of by the end of a year.

lol, you haven’t seen our ship sets. Just no. The guppy is loud enough you want something (actually IIRC the FOM says “thou shalt”). I do have it easier than you as I don’t even try to bring food on a 2 leg commute to 6 day work blocks. The only “extras” I carry in the bag are a couple small sketchbooks and a pencil pouch.
 
oh, I also like being able to stuff the uniform cardigan into the bag, and we have to carry our own safety vests. I don’t object to wearing the vest, but why the company decided on issuing them to the pilots vs stocking the coat closets and/or jetbridges I have no idea.

I mean technically we’re required to wear them on walk around not carry them. I suppose if the pilot group “donated” a vest to every airplane or every jetbridge we wouldn’t have to carry them.

When we started having to wear vests on walkarounds (2014 I think? Maybe?) they gave each 717 pilot their own vests because they had to walk back and forth between ops and the airplane all the time, and put a single vest in all the other aircraft. Cheaper that way too.
