Ewwww. she's old.
While being a pilot certainly didn't hurt the situation, I'd imagine any FA could have been used (as long as she/he was willing, could remain calm AND be a help to the other pilot and not a hinderance.)
Even though it's entirely up to the PIC, I think there'd be questions asked if he/she decided to go solo and NOT get someone up there to help in that kind of situation.
Someone that doesn't know the airplane is still very capable of handling traffic calls, finding charts, etc. I don't see that as babysitting.
Even if it is just helping look out for traffic, I always will take another set of eyes and ears to help me out - seems like common sense to me.
Curious though, is there a general policy or procedure for what to do in the case of an incapacitated airline crewmember, or is it just up to the captain?
I am not at all argueing with you, so please don't take it as such, cause we all would probably do something different.
First off, I have my own charts as well the CA would have his. I can get them out on my own just as I would any flight. As much as the traffic thing is not a bad idea in theory, with TCAS, it is good enough for me for one emergency landing. Lastly, it would be babysitting if I actually wanted help with radios, gear, flaps etc because that person would not be trained on it and it would be, "ok when I call for this, do this exactly like that" when it is just easier for me to do it myself. So with all that said, I am not going to the trouble of getting someone up there with me just to "look for traffic".
Like I said, I am not saying you are wrong, I am just saying I personally would not do it. If person number 2 wants too, then great I hope it goes equally as well.
CHEERS
Unless your airline is different, don't you require 2 people in the cockpit AT ALL TIMES? Sheesh, you guys aren't allowed out to take a leak unless crewmember #2 is up front.
I am fairly certain that by "2 people at all times" does not mean bring any passenger up there. The thinking behind having two people up there means there is is a better chance if there was a decompression that the FA would be able to open the door for the absent pilot in case the decompression caused the flying pilot to pass out.
Once again, if my CA was ill or died, I would not be too concerned about getting another live person up there. I am declairing an EMER and taking it to the nearest suitable airport.
Ewwww. she's old.
I'll take her and every other cougar out here. You've been warned :rawk:
By your post history, I see you're pretty new around here. My post about her age was sarcasm, pure and simple.![]()
