Flashlight...

Here's a good quality one that is bright, small, and won't break the bank.

It's $20 at Wal-Mart, I ordered online for in store pickup.

The ratings on flashlights are kinda obtuse, most regular AA or AAA LED lights are going to be about the same brightness. To get any brighter you have to step up the voltage using special ($$) batteries and I just don't have the time for that. Stick to AA or AAA, IMO.

ZeroHourXD

Little big, but great all around flashlight, plus USB charging. Can charge your iPad three times off a single flashlight charge.

I have several of these stashed in the car, in the house, in my flight bag, etc. It is made of aluminum, about 5" long by 1" diameter, runs on AAA batteries, has good battery life, and features a head that can be rotated from 115 lumens white LED (great for night preflights) to red or green lower intensity LEDs (great in the cockpit). I bought mine originally at Walmart several years ago. Nowadays they don't sell this exact model at Walmart, but they still sell the white/red/blue version for about $25-30. I was able to find a few that still had the green LED feature at a Coleman factory store within the past year though, for about $15 each.

I had one of these and it was one of the best I ever had then left it somewhere. Every christmas Northern tools has a wagon full of 2$ led thats what I use now.

I have a Petzl head lamp that has a red and white setting. I wear it Flav-o-Flav style around my neck most of the time. It's especially hip when I forget it then go to the bar with a headlamp around my neck.

I'll bet you used something like this:

fvUG-v8A.B

For cockpit, still do. The SureFire was for when on the ground in the desert working/tracking/searching. The prolonged use of the SureFire got way too hot with the batteries after about 15 minutes of continuous use.

I liked them when they came out, but hated how the batteries heat up, and thus the whole unit, from prolonged use. So they've gone by the wayside, all sold off.
When was the last time you used them? I run them on all my carbines and pistols (even my every day carry). The newer ones utilizing LEDs get far less hot I've found. And who else is making a 500 lumen flashlight that will fit in the palm of your hand? Of course that's way too many lumens for the cockpit but still, pretty cool.

Those same $2 ones are the free ones from Harbor Freight.

I like that Coleman a lot more. Batteries last a lot longer and it's quite a bit brighter.

That's the similar one I linked to. Walmart ship to store, for $20. White only, no colors. It's a best buy, and I'm a cheapie.

I saw Walmart also sells a white-red-blue Coleman as well for $23.

Or D cell equivalent.

So what is D cell equivalent, in the eyes of the FAA?

The best I could come up was by looking up the ANSI Std. Looking at a 2 D cell mag lite ANSI, the two variables were lumens (19) and battery (10hr).

Now, looking at the modern flashlights with LEDs, most will surpass the lumens, but not necessarily the duration, unless you find one that has multiple settings. I did buy one where the lower brightness setting does indeed output more than 19 lumens for 40 hours I believe.

This may seem overkill on my part, but no one has ever been able to answer the FAAs definition of what a D cell equivalent is.
