Want to Buy Flashlight for use in cockpit

I'm going to be starting more of the night flying that is required for my PPL, and really would like to get a flashlight that has the option of being both red and white(normal).

Dunno if anyone has one laying around they could sell to me. I can pay paypal or whatever. I live in SoCal so if you live there I can just pick it up from you.

Thanks!

i have one of the headlights as well that has white/red....i'd highly recommend it

Thanks for all the suggestions! You guys are awesome.

As you can imagine, my budget is tiny. Realistically I need something to get me through the 3 hours of night flying, that's about it.

13 bucks isn't bad!

Get the cheapest LED one from home depot. Don't worry about the red light, hardly matters for the 3 hours you need to fly (or borrow your CFIs).

I have one that has red and white LEDs, it's nice, always in my headset bag (along with the backup GPS and backup radio, which all happen to take the same AA's. Yay!)

This Petzl headlamp is what I used out in Iraq almost on a nightly basis for preflights on the Blackhawk. The band wraps around your head and it has a folding red cover over the white LEDs if you want the red light. I've used this literally hundreds if not thousands of hours.

Everytime I have a night flight now, (civilian) I always use the headlamp. It frees up your hands, and the light is where you need it (where you're looking). You don't have to worry about shoving a flashlight in your mouth when you fumbling through charts, flight plans, etc...

I would be annoyed if I had to use a regular flashlight.

stick to the headlight from walmart....everything you need and cheap...no it doesn't require you to wear a hat

That would be easier to use while flying. It is a bit cumbersome holding a flashlight and trying to do all the other things.

I like the other for preflight though. Much better than the 2D LED Maglight I started with. That thing was like a spot light on the ramp.

Big bright white one for the preflight inspection, headlamp with both red and white for in the airplane.

I've said it before and I'll say it again,
you can never have too many flashlights for night flying.
I thought I was cool once with two lights but they both crapped out at the same time when I had a starter take a dump on me on Molokai at night. Then my cell phone, which I was using as my third option, started to die on me. I was almost out of light and out of communication with home base. If I needed one in the air that night it could have been bad news.

My primary lights now are a Photon Fusion headlight and a Phantom Warrior flashlight. I'll endorse both wholeheartedly. They run on AA's which are cheap and interchangeable and they have dimmable white lights which I use most of the time. Then I carry extra batteries and a collection of cheaper lights in the bottom of my bag and my key chain.
