First Ultrasounds

Pilot and A Half (for now
I went for my very first U/S on Wednesday. The tech was very rude and didn't tell me anything during the scan. She looked for about 2 minutes, then asked if I could be 2 weeks earlier. I told her it was HIGHLY doubtful. She walked out of the room and when I asked her about it then, she told me she only saw a sac. (I should have been 7 1/2 weeks and seen a fetal pole and heartbeat.) I was really scared there was something wrong with the baby. They wouldn't give me a picture or a CD of the scan. I ended up calling Planned Parenthood and booked an U/S for today. I had to wait over an hour with a full bladder (not nice to do to a pregnant woman!), but the tech was very nice and I told her what happened for the first scan. She tried external first and told me she could easily see the fetal pole. She then did internal and showed me the baby's heartbeat. She gave me some pictures to take and told me I was 7 weeks, 5 days now. :) No more worrying about the health of the baby. I am really upset that I got such a crappy first ultrasound. She said there is no reason they shouldn't have found the fetal pole and that they should have also done an internal U/S. (Today's ultrasound turned out to be a good birthday present too. ;))

Happy Birthday and congrats. It aggravates me to no end when health care professionals are rude or worse yet seemingly uncaring.

How the heck did they get it down to days? When i had my internal U/S, they could only guesstimate the timing to about 7 weeks. Strange that the tech did so poorly....Did you talk to your doctor about that? if not, you should...when i went for mine, they said they don't normally do photos that soon, they wait till things are "in the clear" at the 12 or later week phase....but i could see the whole process on a huge monitor and took some myself with my iphone.

Didn't your doctor come in to talk to you and tell you what the final result was on the first U/S?

Congratulations!! :)

Didn't a doctor come in to talk to you and tell you what the final result was on the first U/S? there should have been one to do that...make sure you talk to your OB/GYN if they recommended the place...and see if they gave your doctor a report on the ultrasound so you can compare their notes to what they tell your doctor.

Congratulations!! :)
Thanks!
I've heard they base it on the baby growing 1mm per day during week 6. They measured the baby as 1.8cm, so it must increase in the 7th week. At the first U/S there was no doctor, just the tech. The second was the same, but the tech may have also been a dr. I am going to request a copy sent to my new midwife, so they can look at it. You can start to see the beginning of a baby. It's not real clear, but you can make out the head and the nubs that will be hands and feet.

Here's the picture. :)
