Hey guys,
I've been an on and off reader of these forums for a long time. JC has been a very valuable insight into the goings-on of different aspects of the industry and I'm very excited to finally take the plunge and start posting here and being a part of this community.
I'm a 21 year old private pilot in the northern SF Bay Area of CA. I started working at a local flight school when I was 17 washing airplanes, which gradually progressed into being an apprentice AMT. I commuted an hour each way to work part time there and self-funded my lessons at the same school, and finally took and passed my PPL checkride two years later. Soon after the company hit hard times and I was let go.
I left high school sure that I was going to find a way to do the Aerospace Science flight program at ERAU Prescott, but after visiting the campus and reading the insight here and elsewhere from Riddle alumni (especially Doug and MikeD), I came to the conclusion that the ends didn't justify the means (namely the colossal debt).
Instead I've spent the last three years at a local community college tutoring math and working my way through the prerequisites to transfer to a four-year college and major in Aerospace Engineering, and I'm hoping to transfer to Calpoly San Luis Obispo in the fall. Flying has had to temporarily go on hold because of school, but I'm eager to start my instrument training and work toward the rest of my ratings - with the goal being to start CFIing while still in college and work towards 135 freight, with engineering as another career option (and I'd like to go back and finish my A&P somewhere in there too). I finished getting my tailwheel endorsement in a Citabria down at LVK a couple months ago, and I'm really looking forward to building some of the PIC X-C time for the IR by bombing around northern California in it.
I'm sure that's way more than anyone cared to know about me, but I just wanted to illustrate how much I appreciate what a valuable resource JC has been for me personally, and I look forward to becoming more involved here.
Thanks for reading!
