First pics - DL Saab 340!

Funny (but sad) story regarding this airplane...

According to one of our MX admin guys that was down in GLH coordindating btwn 9E and the paint shop, apparently the paint shop completely screwed the pooch with this first one.

He was saying that with a Saab, the paint shop is only supposed to remove the actual coat of paint, not the primer, because it somehow messes up the skin and it makes it unairworthy. Well, of course, they go ahead and do it anyway. :banghead:Turns out that they had to get a wavier from the FAA to keep it airworthy and the condition of the waiver is that can never be repainted again. So this paint job is it--if it needs to be repainted, it has to be scrapped....

I think that is one reason why 9E had him go down there with us....

by "somehow messes up the skin" do you mean because the coat over the aluminum is the anti corrosive chemical, and because Leading Edge didn't know that they started scratching off the aluminum? I don't know about it being unairworthy and then airworthy again. That isn't how our XJ rep described it. Who is the pinnacle rep down there you are talking to?

Anyway, the XJ rep down there is Rich.

Yeah that doesn't sound right. The primer is just that; a primer to make the paint adhere better. The only bad thing about it is that the paint will peel easier and they'll have to keep up on spot painting due to corrosion issues.

Well anyhow. Some of the back story on this "Primer" thing is that unlike an American (or really most any other manufacturer) Airbus and Saab make their aluminum a little different. Instead of mixing in anti corrosion products during the manufacturing process they add, almost like a layer of paint, a coating of anti corrosion crap on the metal surface before painting the aircraft.

The chemical painters use to strip the paint leaves a little paint behind, which is sanded out gently later. Of course, the stripping didn't remove the metal protector. The Leading Edge guys thought the primer got left on somehow and decided to start sanding her down a little. Oops. XJ rep caught them before they got very far.

Anyway, this was the first Saab and there were a lot of mistakes on it because this thing ain't like the CRJ's or the Boeings they've done so far. As I understand it, I'm not a professional painter, the process is different than the Airbus too, even though their processes are similar for the aluminum. It's a high learning curve and the next planes, I've been told, are already much better.

The paint is going to strip a little, we aren't letting these things sit for days and days and then waxing them. We paint them, get them back to flying, and move on our merry way. That is all Delta is paying for, and even then they only want the fuselage painted. We (XJ) are opting to paint the wings and engine nacelles, because I guess we want to single handedly stimulate the economy. The northwest Saabs were pink and peeling, the delta ones will be dirty white and peeling. Delta has "big plans" for the Saab, and they want them back up in the air.

Yeah, 9E CRJs don't have re-painted wings or horizontal stabs. So we've got a two toned airplane. Oh yeah, and the paint is flaking off already.

Well, at least we will match.

Thankfully the geniuses at Delta have figured out all this is going to save billions in synergiessssssss.....:sarcasm:

Wonder how long it will be before we have a Northwest nose on a Delta airplane? :panic:

Does it have the GE Jet Power stickers on the side of the nacelles?

I SO want one of those stickers.

LOL.

Well if you really want the sticker I'm sure you can make one on cafepress.com. Of course all of us in the Saab will be trying to figure out if you are clueless that sticker is talking about the battery, not the ge powerplant.
