Not good to run across eyeball containers. Squish, you know.

Yeah, but you can't say that the containers didn't see it coming.

Re: First \"Lifeguard\" Flight

You guys would actually be surprised at how long some of the organs can last. I worked with the research team here at UM who were doing studies on all of the different organs that were transplanted. Kidneys can live outside of the body for about 2 days while a heart can only be outside for like 4 hours.

I would also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to discuss organ transplantation with their various family members. If something should happen to you, please make you wishes known (clearly) to all your family members. Don't want something like what happened to Terry Schiavo to happen to you.

Re: First \"Lifeguard\" Flight

sorry about the confusion - I was trying to make the point that whether or not you want your organs donated you should talk to your family about your wishes before you die, whether they are transplanting organs, not staying on life support etc. It's always easier for a family to do what the KNOW their loved ones wanted rather than trying to guess. I was just using Terry Schiavo as an example of what happens when you do not make things clear to everyone.

The whole story or just recently?

I THINK she is still being kept alive by a feeding tube and the families are still battling.

If you want the whole story, PM me.

Re: First \"Lifeguard\" Flight

I think that there is an eye bank in Cincinatti because we haul eyes fairly often. According to our FOM, they have to ride in the cockpit with us. The first time I carried them, a ramper walked up with the box singing "I only have eyes for you" to the FA.

I've also hauled kidneys and other assorted body parts, but they can go in the cargo bay. I see more eyes than anything else.

I've had mixed luck with Lifeguard. Sometimes it doesn't seem to help at all, but other times it does. Once I even got direct CVG just after takeoff at CRW (Charlie West).
