First day of IOE.

So here is the trick to DEN ramp. You did not read this here folks. If your airframe has two comm antennas (antenae?), lets say one on the bottom and top, utilize the upper one. When someone steps on you (or you roll over them), chances are the controller will hear you over the other guy... results may vary ;)
That used to be in the EWR ATIS.

Okay, okay... why was he even allowed to continue to be a Check Airman. His behavior had to have already been known to the company, prior to this episode.
New hires won't write him up for fear of their jobs and the knowledgable FOs just bid away, or drop trips with DBs like this.

Edit: I think my phone is racist. When I initially put DB in the above post, it autocorrected it to Arabs.

Those reasons, plus, unfortunately at some properties, training departments don't always put the most qualified people in positions of power but rather those who are "good" company pilots.

The path to management often runs through a training department (or an MEC!).

Meh... I've worked in the psych ward for the past eight years. So I'm used to working with various individuals who are bipolar, or all manner of maladaptive personality disorders. The likes of psychopathy/sociopathy, narcissitic personality disorder and borderline personlity disorder, etc. So intimidation, power struggles, redirection and difusion/conflict management are second nature to me. I'm not afraid of confrontation. So not sure if that makes me a good candidate or not. But that would have at least been a conversation, and then a call to pro stands if things didn't improve.

And her husband? Boyfriend? Person that trained her? They are only slightly different. She stresses when there's one plane pushed back. He has to have the mic keyed to think.

"Ahhhhh. Okkkkkk gguuuyys. Here's the plan. 1291? 1291? 1291 ARE YOU READY TO TAXI?! And break, ok, ah, Skywest I want you behind trans states, and break, ah, he's waiting on republic, ah, 1291? 1291? Ah, you guys need to listen up on the radio, and break, ah, trans states you're supposed to be behind Skywest! Ah, who's calling for push? Ah, bravo south, double back on the green line, stop abeam the tower, wait for 32 seconds then continue to the gate, and break, 1291?!?!?!, ah...."

Meanwhile NO ONE can get a word in to push or call for taxi.

Well, you get the drift.
If you see a 175 that is sitting there happily waiting for flap-slat extension before reading the After Start, that'd be me, not answering ramp control.

"I'm busy."

"Down and three green"
"Flaps...................
............…...............5 before landing checklist complete"

The first words I ever heard on CLT ramp after asking for push on my IOE was "Just a heads up for everyone that its going to be a minute, Lufthansa (A330) is lost and not talking to anyone so everyone just sit tight while they find a home." about 10 minutes later they came around the corner (after still not talking to anyone) from the south ramp (which i didnt think the heavy's could do) and finally parked. The Check Airman said "Welcome to Charlotte!"

Lufthansa has been getting lost on that ramp for a long, long time now.

One trip home earlier this fall I had the pleasure of riding up front in a CR9 with a couple of nice folks - Well we get going from south ramp and CLT turned around to the 18's, so we got the world tour. South ramp controller on duty was some young girl that was doing her best to keep up, but you could tell she was new. Captain made the remark of how smoothly CLT was running, "well this isn't the Charlotte I'm used to..." and sure enough after the sixth "Going in or coming out" the instructions stopped and planes were sitting on spots awaiting further taxi instructions, some trying for 18L, some trying to get in at C10(C11?)...whole lot of nothing going on. Male voice came on after a brief moment and says "All aircraft continue to hold position, your ramp controller just had a panic attack...sorry folks...just be a minute up here."

We figured it was some lunch break, but Charlotte just sucks.

I miss the old ramp.

"Uh, tell ya what, ah got a -900 and 2 -200s comin' off the North Line, should be comin' 'round the C Con, give way to them, follow the Mini Bus take it around in sequence, Spot 8 Point 9"

Apparently, the nAAtives can't deal with anything less than 40 spots, so they had to redo the ramp.

You just wait. Eventually they'll be shoving you through DEN on a regular basis.

Denver ramp is a total party sometimes. We're pushed off the gate along with 3 on our right and 3 on our left. We're all trying to get a word in on top of all the noise. "6355, green line abeam 54, break uhhh ok ahhh sorry guys I gotta untangle this mess 328 you on? 328??? *Silence* "brrrrt-squeall-screachhhhh-ush off 82" *silence* "whose calling for push off 82?" "ramp Unit- squeal screech bzzz 3 echo gate 44" mean while captain is telling me "you just gotta jump in man just get on the radio until you can get him to talk to us...." I'm thinking to myself. Well what do you think I've been trying... I've already talked on top of other guys accidentally 5 times already... I'm trying... Lol

My favorite was one of the even gates right on the end. I was accidentally calling north ramp when I needed to call south ramp. A pilot speaks up "hey gate 94 talk to south ramp." Captain and I were relieved north ramp was being run by the person that sounds stressed all the time and stressed everyone else out. South ramp was running a lot more smoothly.

I almost got creamed by a (seeminly) 70 knot RJ in DEN once. He was supposed to follow us but he wasn't stopping and I didn't trust he was.

That happens in CLT all the time. I lost count of how many times I had pushed back off the B Concourse and been told to hold because a CRJ didn't stop at a particular spot and call the next Ramp. Next thing I know, there comes Mesa or PSA screaming through there, not talking to a soul.

Eyup.

We produce an extreme amount of FOQA data as well.

Want to hot dog? Buy your own airplane.

Paid by the minute.

But be careful when those toads who fly standups are around - because they aren't paid by the minute. I wish I could correlate FOQA fast-taxi and other nonsense data to "are you on a standup Y/N?" just to prove a point, but yeah.
