First customer to walk out on me

I had a guy walk out on me because I was younger then him. He went to a brand new CFI that was in his 50's.

I've had something similar happen in the air. We briefed on the ground that we would be doing stalls, and he had no objection. In the air, he refused to do a full stall saying that he "just won't do any accidental stalls."

I tell him that if we don't do full stalls, I can't sign off his flight review. He immediately turns into a 3-year old, so I take the controls and bring the plane in for landing. He gets out, won't even come inside to log the time. Just goes to his car and drives off (fortunately we got his card on file with a signed authorization before the flight, so we were able to still bill him for the flight and ground time).

All things considered, I'm glad I don't have my signature anywhere near his logbook.

If people are too afraid to stall an airplane, they are in the wrong business/hobby. A stall is one of the most basic manuevers that can be asked of a pilot. I don't care what kind of training excuses they come up with to make them feel better about their inadequacies......their inability to confront their fears is the bottom line here.

i did some training with a CFI applicant a few years back and this particular individual was deathly afraid of stalls, especially at night. They would not even do imminent stalls until i told them that legally per the 141 TCO i cannot complete the lesson unless we do everything listed in the TCO. I also asked about what are you going to do when training a primary student to perform stalls safely at night, and they just told me they would do it in that situation but wouldn't do it when they were at the controls? makes no sense.

you did the right thing, my name would not have gone into that persons log book either.

^^ Interesting. Don't think I ever did any night stalls in civvie school (though did a few in mil jet school). Probably a good idea for wider dissemenation amongst CFI's/flight schools.

we do them all the time (well, i do anyway) there are some i won't do unless i know the student is a rock star, particularly full stall from power on entry in the PA44, one wing always drops and students always always always use the ailerons to try and raise it....i think we all know how well that works out. problem with previous training/primacy:(

now if i was flying i would have no problems with it, but not when students are at the controls, i don't like fighting them for controls in that sort of situation.

Man, you've been nowhere until you do night spin training.........
