First Airline Interview (Great lakes). Tips?

Got the phone call today...good a bad news..well I guess for some it may be good and better news :p

Brent, that interviewed me, gave me a call and started off by saying I had an outstanding interview and at 19 I am in a golden position in the industry. I did not get the job offer due to my age. Their policy is 21 minimum age. He wasn't happy to tell me that but it is what it is. He said otherwise he would give me a class date and he claimed that the only reason I am not getting the offer is simply because the age.

Sure makes me feel great especially that I do have good interview experience now. I guess I'll give myself a year and a half and head over to Skywest one day...

Thanks everyone for the support!

In other words... they showed their professionalism: they completely wasted your time by not knowing their own hiring policies.

Good job, boys. If the USSC had done its job in Cline, it would be illegal for them to discriminate based on age.

Ahwell—in this case, it's likely for the best. You ARE well positioned, and they're going to lose out on a potentially -excellent- candidate based on their own stupid policy.

You bring up a good point. Spend money on flight and hotel, take some days off your current job and lose money, all for them to say you're too young? What kind of BS is that? Read the app...I'm sure it says his birth date somewhere!

So they wasted your time, perhaps got your hopes up, cost you money to fly out there and back and for a hotel, etc.when they had no intention due to their own policy of hiring you in the first place? WTH!! People did try warn you that they are a bunch of ass hats. I am sorry you went through this, but if you feel the exercise in going through an interview process was worthwhile, then sobeit. As of today, still don't have their 135 approval yet either, btw.

I am going to post two recent quotes from another forum from current pilots there, just in case someone else get's a wild hair over Great Mistakes:

"Forget about upgrades and all at this place! Who knows when we will see another upgrade and even then, if you upgrade, doesn't mean you will actually sit in that seat and log PIC time after that!

I can tell you what you will gain by coming to Lakes, is the appreciation for virtually any other flying job out there! We don't have anything at this place anymore. No quality of life, no high credit lines, no nice overnights and no time building opportunities. I can tell you how a typical trip starts at this place. You will show up, call on duty (as you are required to) only to find your entire pairing has been changed. Don't expect to fly much of your line, as a line holder. Expect to have your left seat flying canceled (even though you are a super senior Captain) and put in the right seat to fly with someone else. Half of your overnights get canceled, due to lack of crew, so if you commute, get a crashpad. Don't ever expect another day of vacation at the company, as every vacation for the last 8 months has been canceled. Also, expect a weeks notice of your base closing and expect your line that you were awarded to be taken away and instead get a relief line in another base (with no regard to seniority at all)

This a tough place to be right now, even tougher then before and I would tell anyone who is remotely thinking of coming here, to look elsewhere. Look yourself in the mirror and tell yourself, you are better then this place!

I find it so hard to believe we have hundreds of people lined up for the 135 stuff. Seriously, do your homework and know what you are getting into!

That's all I can say about this place right now, maybe it will get better, but who are we kidding!"

and

"as most people have said already, RUN! The promise of a fast upgrade is false!

During INDOC, May 2013, we had upper mgmt guy come into our class to introduce himself, talk about the fast upgrade and answer questions. I asked, "What is Great Lakes prepared to do to ensure they will be able to attract new hires so that I may upgrade from the right seat to the left seat with the impending ATP rule." Basically, to make sure my seat was filled so I could upgrade. His response, in quotes "We'll cross that bridge when we get there." Needless to say, I took the upgrade test, passed, then all upgrades were stopped. That was almost a year ago, and no one has upgraded since."

They did you a favor, believe me. Your time will come. Just hang in there and best of luck.
