Fired.

I was just fired from my current job. I guess thats what I get for being totaly honest about applying for ATC. My question is will this affect my chances seriously? Right now all I have left to do is the background check and wait on my academy date. I am afraid that during the background check my old supervisor will slam me, should I be worried?

Depends on what you got fired for.

Go find another job in the meantime. It's going to be a bit of a wait for you.

How long of a wait do you think? Background check is all I seriously have left. I have alrdy done the physicals, interviews, MPI and all that jazz.

I had gotten fired from a job and I disclosed it on my background check info. I have my security clearance because I was honest. There shouldn't be a problem just tell them about it. I also believe that your employer cannot legally say anything bad about you.

Depends on your facility. However, most people won't be going to the academy until after October 2009. Just because you're waiting on background does not mean you will get a class date or FOL any time near when your clearances come in.

they don't really have a chance to personally slam you during reviews.. they get a scantron with specific info requested on it.

As long as you stipulate you were fired and say it was for applying for a different career you won't have anything to worry about.

Sorry about the firing! That sucks! About 2 months after my husband applied for the ATC he was layed off. It sucked. We just changed the information we needed to and prayed he would get the job soon and looked for others in the mean time. He worked at the other found job for almost a year and a half! You are much farther in the process than we were though.

If you can, apply for Unemployement now. You will have a waiting period no matter what, might as well have that be right now than in 2 weeks having to wait another 2 weeks.

did you get fired because you told them you applied for ATC? I mean that's how I understood it.

I'm no lawyer but I don't think they can do that. What are they going to say, conflict of interest? so your fired! hmmm

I really don't see why an employer would fire someone for job-hunting. But I suppose in an at-will state (if where the poster lives is in fact, at-will) it doesn't really matter.

I was just gonna say that...here in the sunshine state they call it "right to work." Basically they can fire you for any reason or no reason. And my husband just got laid off in April, all his boss told him was "we have to part ways" what kinda crap is that??? but whatever, so he filed for unemployment and his ex-job is trying to get it denied because they say he was continually late to work, although they have nothing to back up that claim (i.e. write-ups, late time sheets) so we are appealing that decision...

just make sure you update ASAP. You don't want to be disqualified for something stupid like forgetting to update your work history. good luck...

I can't wait to give my letter of resignation.. hehe

And then hear the counter-offer (which I will never accept)

Plus, I just went to salary after I got my Bachelors degree 4 weeks ago.

I submitted my two-week's notice this morning, and it just so happened to be pay-day, and my wife works for the same company in a different department...what a field day! After almost 16 months since originally applying PUBNAT2, it feels great to finally get the gears turning and have puzzle pieces falling into place.

So were you fired for being truthful or for some other reason?

Also, I was just selected for ZNY and as a student who had recently graduated when I applied, my work history is fairly bare, but I was still selected. I would imagine that your current employment is less of a factor than prior experience, the circumstance in which your employment ended, and whether you are in deep financial trouble due to lack of employment.
