Fired engineer calls 787's plastic fuselage unsafe

Greetings, Professor Falken
You think this is a disgruntled employee or does he have some validity to his claims? I tried to google crash tests involving composite materials but didn't really find anything. To me it sounds more like the guy is just a disgruntled ex employee. And this part really takes away from his credibility

"Weldon was fired for threatening a supervisor, specifically for stating he wanted to hang the African-American executive "on a meat hook" and that he "wouldn't mind" seeing a noose around the executive's neck."

More disgruntled than anything. You'll hear that there's still some to be learned about composites, but really it's not unsafe in itself. Two big things about composites are how they will react to 10's of thousands of cycles with the percentage increase of use on airliners and the knowledge of those maintaining and repairing. Also, composites have some mighty nasty chemicals that aren't nice when they burn.
 
Definitely disgruntled...

I could be wrong, but look at the track record Boeing has with the 7X7 line of aircraft. Seems to me the safe bet is to trust Boeing.

Furthermore, he was fired in July 2006. Why is he waiting until now (14 months later) to express his concerns to the media. The only thing I can think of is that is for the most part "on schedule" and he would like nothing more than to screw over his former employer while enjoying his own 15 seconds of fame.
