$350 for an IN HOUSE background check is definitely a profit center. Like everything else up there.
Can't blame them though - they are lining up to pay for it.
after i took my intro flight last summer i was told that if i wanted to continue with lessons i had to go and get a background check/fingerprinted. that was up in bay city michigan. so its not just the boston area.

Michigan had a state-wide 9-11 knee-jerk-reaction law for a while requiring back-ground checks and such for all student pilots. Since been repealed. (AOPA helped with getting it off the books, BTW)
