I checked with AOPA concerning your question and it turns out that MassPort is requiring background checks for individuals in the Boston/Bedford area. Not sure if this applies to you, but assume so given your location.

ive had to do the same thing this week.I go to bridgewater state and fly with DCA. Theres also a large fee for procesing that we have to pay.

$350 for fingerprinting you have to be !@#$%^&* kidding me!

350 $ for Big brother to fingerprint you? What A f--in joke. Its for "safety".....not to generate revenue right? Oh and thats great they fingerprint you up there. What about the thousands of people flying into the area each year? BAHHH fingerprinting really gets on my nerves

I know that at Polar Air Cargo they were finger printing all of the line pilots, at Alteon Training, any foreign national that is not rated in an aircraft of 12,500 or more pounds, they are required to be finger printed as part of the submission policy to the DOJ.

Wait... aren't all airline pilots required to be fingerprinted? I realize that the origional discussion had to do with people taking lessons, but as the Polar Air thing. They are just like any ramp rat or CSA... They have acess to "secure" areas and hence have to pass a background check involving fingerprinting. The $350 part is pretty bad though.

$350 is what DCA is charging for "processing fee"
I don't know what others schools are charging.

yea, its pretty rediculous. i know the aviation department is currently in the process of negotiating with dca. Between the condition and cost of there aircraft and the fingerprinting thing, DCA is really getting on some people nerves. have experience very few positive things since my enrollment.

I worked at McCarran International two years back, and finger printing isn't cheap. I think it was a least $500 back in 2002 at McCarran. So I doubt they are making any money on the deal, but in my opinion it is riddiculus to have that done.

John,

The figure I posted also included a background check. I am sure a background check isn't that cheap. Sure it is cheap to take fingerprints, but to run a background check takes some time. But, I wouldn't put it past DCA to do something like that.

I recently did a complete background check of my self and my wife (for a new business.) Even with the expedite fee ($75 each) it was less than $300 a piece.

That is pretty good John, so I guess I have come to the conclusion that DCA is gouging its students.
