FII - Written Exam

I have recently passed my instrument written exam and want to take the Flight Instructor Instrument Written exam - I am not yet a flight instructor - can I take the exam without being a flight instructor? And if I can what kind of approval do I need before I take the test? Thanks.

No approval needed for any Flight Instructor exam. And no, no need to be a CFI before you take it.

I'd strongly suggest you take it now if you intend on getting your CFII within the next 24 months. Just one less thing to have to worry about in the future.

Honestly, I wish I had done that. At the time I was looking at going to MAPD, so there was no need for those silly CFI ratings. Now I have to study all that stuff again. On the one hand it's annoying, on the other hand, it'll make me better prepared for my checkrides if I study it again.

Yeah, obviously I've since seen the error of my ways.
