FEDEX FEEDER

Someone explain to me why some of the FEDEX feeders are using 2 and even sometimes 3 planes on one route? Why don't they just get a twin on the route? Thanks

Its not up to the Feeder to decide what kind of aircraft to put on a route. All that is decided by The Man. It could be a temporary bump in freight for a particular company and don't forget 3 Caravans hardly equal an ATR.

i don't know what the capacity is of an ATR, but I am not sure fedex really uses any other twins. We had 4 Vans all go to 1 location on tuesday this week! normally 2 are scheduled (typically 4000-4800lbs/day) but I think an ATR can haul a lot more, so it really doesn't make much sense over the minor bump in freight.

It's definitely cheaper to run 2 caravans as opposed to 1 ATR, even the small ATR.

Most of our runs out here in California have two Caravans scheduled, with a few that will have 3 part of the week. Once your route starts seeing 3+ regularly, watch out! Cause the ATR is gonna come eat it up and you're gonna be going somewhere else. Haha. That's what happened to our Santa Barbara route long before I got here. But the reverse is also true, as an ATR used to handle Monterey until freight dropped enough to use two Caravans.

All the A/C in Fedex color are own by FDX, and lease the A/C to different feeder operator.

4 Operators for the ATR : In The USA : Mountain Air Cargo & Empire Airlines, 1 operator in Canada & 1 in europe ( Do not recall the name ).
C208 in the US : Wiggins, Mountain Air, Baron Aviation, Corporate airlines, Empire Airline,West Air & CSA ( Own by Airt who also own Mountain air cargo ).

FDX also uses other operator as feeder A/C ( Those A/C are not own & are not in FDX color ). As an example, IBC airways & IFL are used in Miami by FDX to go to Mexico & the Carribean.

Hope this help.
