FedEx Anch Hub

Empire operates an ATR, and a Caravan, the Caravan goes ANC-ENA-HOM-ANC or something like that, and the ATR runs up to FAI. Both jobs are done by 3pm or so iirc. The pilots for the ATR in ANC had it incredibly good. 33hrs a month or so, home everynight, and barely any work.

I've often wondered what the JNU ATR schedules are like. Seems like you'd RON every other night and every other weekend. The every other night isn't a big deal, but the every other weekend would suck....

JNU-SIT 8202 10:45 AM 11:31 AM M T W Th F
SIT-SEA 8202 12:01 PM 4:49 PM M T W Th F
SEA-KTN 8202 6:19 PM 8:38 PM M T W Th F
KTN-SEA 7202 11:30 AM 3:24 PM M T W Th F
SEA-SIT 7202 4:54 PM 8:12 PM M T W Th F
SIT-JNU 7202 8:42 PM 9:26 PM M T W Th F

A quick google search revealed this schedule, don't know how accurate it is though.....

I've shopped myself and my new Comm ME and SE tickets and 315 hours TT, 255 AK time, around the state for the last 4 months. No joy on a right seat so far with anyone in state and my cash flow is drying up, so I'm now a full time FedEx employee in Valdez, until I can get into the air.

I went to the anch hub for some initial training and saw a bunch of MD11's, the ATR, and a handful of vans. I also saw the huge full motion sim across the street. I was astonished at the size of the operation. But I was stuck on the ground with a bunch of employees who could care less about flying.

I have training for two weeks at the hub coming up and wanted to chat with a pilot or two in order to figure out whether it makes sense to stay inside the FedEx corp whilst continuing to build time in my 150 or if it is a lost cause for a low timer like me.

In other words, does being on the inside matter? I haven't been able to figure it out yet...

I'm no expert but I think being an employee is a guaranteed interview within the company for any open position, but with the desirability of a FedEx pilot position it would be a LONG time before you had anywhere close to the requisite times to be anywhere even close to competitive.

That said, FedEx does have the reputation of advancement from within and I believe a killer tuition reimbursement program. There may be some great long term career opportunities there for you if flying doesn't quite work out.

You might also try working at a different station that has a little more aviation activity around it and network that way. Juneau sees at least two ATRs a day. If you're going to stay in Valdez your best bet might be getting your CFI tickets and instructing in your aircraft if you can generate the business. Like I mentioned to you earlier you're in one of the few areas of the state without a large amount of aviation business.
