FCC Radiotelephone

Depends where you're at in training, where you want to go down the road (both career and travel destinations).

If you're training for a private cert., not critical.

Getting ready for the airlines, probably ought to have one. Some require you to have one when you apply if I'm not mistaken. Maybe those that don't require it at application may pay for it for you, I'm not sure though.

Flying for recreation out of the country I think you may need one.

From what I hear it doesn't take much to get one, fill out a few forms and send the government $60 I think

Putz'n around the U.S.A. in a 172, not necessary

How critical is it to get an FCC Radiotelephone license?

Get it. Most regionals want you to have it. It's a one time fee of like $50 or something like that, but you need it if you are interviewing anytime soon. Oh, and get a Passport too, if you don't have one already.

And I second that. The RRTOP is good for life and a passport good for 10 years (well, at least my UK one is). Some require them, some don't...but its always best to have these bases covered well ahead of time. I recently had a friend unexpectedly get called in on fairly short notice for an interview with CHQ. Boy was there a lot of running around prior to the interview trying to get all this "additional" documentation together. It all worked out, but he had to endure quite a bit of additional stress during an already very stressful time.

Just remember all...you never know when that next critical interview is around the corner. ALWAYS be as prepared as possible.

You can do it all online. Just make sure to print out the confirmation forms.

Where do you get it online? Could you please post a link if you have one? Also, what are the requirements for it?

Thank you.

Yeah it really irks me that I have to pay the Govt. a bunch of money to have a piece of paper that says I can operate a radio but whatever...

yeah go ahead and get it - chances are you're going to need some day. Just make sure you don't lose it(like I did) or you will have to pay more money to get another one(like I did)!!!

As a humourous aside, an unnamed regional flying red tail jets with an absolutley stellar flight operations management group (insert sarcasim here) started service to the Bahamas BEFORE they figured out that alot/most of their Captains didn't have the license and it is required to fly to the Bahamas!

They are good for life, but are you sure you got the right one? I don't think mine was that much...but I got it in 2002. Maybe they raised the price.

If you want to work for the airlines, about 100% critical.

It's a 'hoop' to jump thru and a travesty that you actually need it, but it's easy to do, costs less than an hour in a C-152 and required by most airlines.

I know the website isn't the easiest to figure out(another benefit of not losing it once you get it!!) but yeah dude - if you paid $105 you did something wrong.

Yeah I screwed it up. The right one is $55, make sure you get the "RR" on the scroll down list and not the "Aircraft" one.
