An FCC license is required for any flight outside of the 50 US states where radio contact with foreign ATCs will be made.

Yeah - it's good to get - a technical requirement - but just to clarify no one actually checks for your "FCC radio license" in the Bahamas. Technically, you're supposed to have a 'ground station license' for operating a handheld radio on the ground also.
It's stupid and completely un-needed, it's technically an ICAO bs requirement, along with a 'radio station license'.
And very technically you don't need it, unless the country has adapted ICAO flight rules and has a requirement for it.

Actually, you will need two items. If you are flying your own airplane, then that aircraft needs a FCC radio station license. The PIC must also have a restricted radiotelephone operators permit in his or her possesion.
Both can be obtained online from the FCC. Personally I've found the FCC's ULS (online license application system) to be a PITA. Not very user friendly at all.

I actually had both my company aircraft's FCC License and my personal FCC License checked by a Bahamian CAA guy. He said that if you don't have them on you, it's a $250 fine for each one you don't have. This was at Governor's Harbour on Eleuthera Island (on a Sunday of all days). I think he was just bored and needed to see if he could make some $$.

Ha - I'll stear clear of there from now on. Just up the Island at White Crown, North Eleuthra... the people couldn't be nicer! Go to Mathewstown... that another story, everyone has their hand out.

Personally, I think the FCC permits, license, whatever you want to call them are a joke. No test, no one even talks to you. Just fill out the form, pay your sixty bucks, and you are issued the right to talk on a radio in a foreign country.

According to the Customs/Immigration people at Rock Sound (where I flew into more during our 2 weeks in the Bahamas), the CAA official can fine you that much. I got lucky our second day there, I was flying to Ft. Laud to get supplies at Costco...the customs official asked me to pick up some stuff for him/his family. Naturally I did, and later that trip he stayed around to clear my boss and his family, even though we were an hour late getting there.
Rock Sound is a great airport to fly into if you're going anywhere south of Governor's Harbour.
