Favorite thing about dispatching

For most people the worst part of their jobs is their boss. I'm not really even sure who my boss is.

Being junior assigned when you have a trip planned on your days off....great feeling to be able to tell your kids that you can't take them to Disneyland.

Piggy backing off this, the best part of dispatching for me is the level of autonomy we have. I've worked in a few jobs at my company, and despite all the talk about "empowering" employees management couldn't help but control every decision that was made. If the "wrong" decision was made there was always explaining to do. In dispatch we're "empowered" by the FAA first and foremost, and that's no lip service. Joint authority involves the Captain and Dispatcher, so as long as we can justify what we're doing in regards to safety/legality there's not a lot of room left for micromanagement by others.

That's not to say there isn't any Monday morning quarter backing that goes on, but it's generally kept to a minimum.

You just saved your self about a grand and numerous headaches. :)

lol...I’ll give you that but the time I spend with my family is very valuable and there is price on that.

I have learned over the past few years that time with family is valuable because you never know when you will lose someone or be taken away from this life....it’s been a tuff 5 years for me.

But on the upside of the job - I like Jump-seating the best!

Totally understand - Ive told my kids many times that there is always a price to pay for what you want to do. That price comes in many forms - time, money, ones values, not being there and the list can go on. Only the person involved can determine if it is worth it to pay that price.
