Favorite (Aviation) Movie

Greatest aviation movie ever? "The Dirtbike Kid" Yes I got hooked as a little boy and am still waiting for an "80cc dirtbike" that really flies and fights bulldozers and all that good stuff. Not exactly aviation related, but it did have some flying in it and it was a great movie to boot. And why has nobody mentioned "Top Gun"? I always liked that one.

I'm sitting here watching Air America at the scene where they crash the Huey into the trees. Take a peek at how Mel Gibson's dog tags are hanging from his neck.

D'oh! Someone didn't catch that in post-production!

How many of us grew up watching Baa Baa Black Sheep on TV. I’m still waiting for the series to be released on DVD.

Allll right, maybe an irrelevant question, but here goes: Which allied fighter was better, the Corsair or the Mustang? Head to head, which would you rather be in?

Having no chance to fly either one, and therefore, having an opinion based entirely on second hand knowledge, I give my opinion knowing that I have no authoritative knowledge.

I'd rather be in the Mustang.

In no particular order...

Memphis Belle

Top Gun

Pearl Harbor (you guys are right, the love triangle thing just pissed me off about that movie...they had to go and screw up a perfectly good battle where America kicks some ASh with a stupid beotch who can't keep her legs closed..../rant off)

Oh and we can't forget...

Bikini Airways (even though the alleged 747 only had one deck and three engines...it was still realistic!! )

which pearl harbor are you thinkin of? I'm pretty sure we got our asses handed to us in that one.

The best aviation movie had Nicole Eggert (from Baywatch) in it. The movie, I think it was called Frequent Flier, was about an airline pilot who had a wife in hawaii, Texas, LA, and Chicago, all at the same time!!!

Ha Ha, that movie was on tv last night! I was flipping channels and saw Jack Wagner load Nicole Eggert on board a plane. Typical low budget - exterior shot of an MD-series, interior of probably a DC-10, exterior takeoff shot of a 747, and a flight deck from god knows. Also, both pilots were discussing Wagners predicament with their headsets around their necks. They finished their discussion and then put them on. I hope that they didn't miss any important ATC transmissions.

Didn't we do this thread already?

Although not my favorite aviation movie, I saw "Pushing Tin" the other day with a new perspective as a pilot and I thought it was pretty entertaining.

As far as the Corsair or the Mustang, having also grown up with "Baa Baa Black Sheep" and being a former squid, I gotta say FLY NAVY (or Marines in the case of Pappy Boyington's VMF-214 squadron)!

P-51 vs. Corsair I would have to go with P-51 if it was a straight head to head mainly because of performance. However any savvy pilot knows that "style" counts for much more when your flying a warbird and because of this the Corsair pulls away easily with my vote.

Don't forget battle damage.

A P-51 has a liquid cooled merlin engine. One piece of shrapnel through any coolant line or the radiator, and the Mustang's finished.

A corsair's engine is an air coolled R-2800. This engine is the toughest engine ever built.

I knew a corsair pilot who had three whole cyilders blown off his engine and he still flew it 150 miles to get home. He said oil was spraying everywhere, but he wasn't going to jump untill the big fan quit. When he landed they pulled twenty 30cal rounds out of the armor platting behind his seat.

If I recall the F8F Bearcat was faster than either the Mustang or the Corsair.

Wow,

I think there are much more aviation movies that I've never seen or heard of. Thanks though, this will keep my movie list filled for couple weeks.

Yeah, big radials could really take the battle damage.

The father of a friend of mine flew P-47's in Europe in WWII. I believe that it is almost the same engine as the Corsair. He had a cylinder blown completely off and flew back to his base. Another guy in his unit took an artillery shell (88?) through a prop blade and still made it back.

As far as Army Air Force planes in WWII I gotta go with the "Jug". Navy planes I vote for the F6F Hellcat made by the Grumman Iron Works.

Flight of the Intruder, just for the Skyraider footage.

Strategic Air Command, great inflight footage. June Allyson is hot.

Bridges at Toko Ri
