Favorite Airport?

Funny you mention Ukiah, I've got some family out there. I remember going out to check out the airport there when I was about 14 and bugging the crap out of some corporate pilots that flew a Citation into there. Nice enough airport.

Id have to say Hong Kong Kai Tak, when it was still up and running.

Dubai isnt bad, but....nothing like home sweet home, coming in on 16R bypassing the Harbour Bridge for Sydney International!

Cheers

Visalia. I like it. it was a good stop to make the over 100nm night dual for me. Other than that, not good for much. Went there once during the day too.

Better than Ukiah is Weed.

Have a lake house up by Chester, CA. Rogers field is fun. Fire fighting during a lot of the summer, and they come right over the house after takeoff, after turning over the lake. Cool airport.

Now, for a favorite.
Locally, Fazier Lake. Only about 15nm from my home airport.

Another favorite is Oceano. Take-off over the beach. Kinda cool.

Well a lot of people's favorite was Meigs Field (right on the dowtown Chicago lake front), until the mayor decided to bulldoze it at midnight!

So that one being gone, I would now have to say that KLAS (McCarren) is my favorite!

Vegas baby Vegas!

Any airport you call home.

Any airport with a grass runway, a BBQ restaurant next door, and frequented by taildraggers.

DFW, EWR, MDW? Egads...you guys need to get out more.

The only big airport I actually enjoy flying into is JFK.

I got over the "Wow! I'm on approach to LAX!!" real quick.

Ft. Walton/Eglin AFB (VPS) is 'interesting' at times.

The controllers are a little off kilter, the guy on the ATIS is generally practicing for the auction and there's always a couple of F-15's putting on an airshow.

Washington National!
Great view of the D.C. area while on approach, and while your touring near the Mall, you can always spot plenty of traffic.

That's my favorite as well. I love that approach. I wish I could fly the river approach myself but that's not in the cards since DCA is closed to general aviation.

hey Doug,
mybe i just dont understand, but why did you get over the approach into LA quickly, and why is JFK so enjoyable?

cheers

Well any major airport is only a thrill the first couple of hundred times you fly into it!

But JFK has a little nostalgia. A bunch of huge airplanes from strange countries with weird names, there's a beautiful view of the NYC skyline and it's delightfully hectic.

My home field, MKC (Kansas City Downtown) is cool, as the Missouri River encircles the field and you take off or land right next to the downtown skyline.

I like little airports. One of my favorites is K81, Miami County in Paola, Kansas. It's not too far outside of Kansas City and a quick flight will get you there for some great barbeque. It's such a quiet little airport, but there's a nice big ramp area with a barbeque restaurant right on the field. It's always hopping with aircraft flying in for food, and nothing beats flying in at dusk on a hot summer evening with friends for some food.

I do some flying out of 0N0, which really could mean "oh no!" as the runway is 2700x20 and in pretty bad shape. On the north end, big trees require you 'chop n' drop' when landing south, and the first 500' of the north end of the runway is pretty much unusable due to a sharp upslope. It's as down home as you get - old tin hangars, barbeque and beer on Wednesday nights, a great little flight school that is as 'homey' as you can get, with a sign on the door saying "congratulations, you've just landed on the narrowest paved runway in Missouri." It's appropriately enough named Roosterville Airport, oftentimes lovingly referred to as "Roosterville International". Its a great bunch of people, very close knit, all fly-out to pancake breakfasts together. The place is a little slice of heaven just outside of Kansas City, just a bit to the east of MCI.

Two weekends ago I flew to Memphis and went to a big hangar party over at 2M8, Charles W. Baker Airport in Millington, TN. That airport gets a high ranking just based on the aircraft kept there! In the brief time I was there, I saw three Stearmans, a T-6, a T-28B, and the most gorgeous polished Cessna 195 you've ever seen.

I planned on doing my commercial x/c to Meigs, unfortunately wasn't able to get there for obvious reasons...

MKC is my favorite too. Great controllers, great approaches, nice view of the Kansas City skyline.

K81 is nice too. Been there a few times to eat lunch/dinner.

I also like Whiteman AFB (SZL). Flying ILS approaches there with B-2s, T-38s, and A-10s is kind of cool.

I've got a video of an approach and landing in Aspen also...how can I get it onto the computer?

[/ QUOTE ]What is it on right now? Assuming a VCR tape, I have a set-up (Radeon All-In-Wonder capture card) that allows me to hook up my VCR to my computer and capture the video. I've been using it to copy down some old video tapes before they become completely obsolete and save them to DVD. I even have one of my return from my first dual cross country!

Midway (KMDW), since it is home, and it is 50% longer than my other favorite, St. Vincent (TVSV). I also like Georgetown, Guyana (SYCJ). And let's not forget "Al's Garage"
