Farnsworth Lantern / Optec 900

Question for the ignorant: What's so special about these gadgets / tests?

For those of us stricken with the genetic defect of color deficiency, it allows us other color vision tests (sanctioned by the FAA) that we can take prior to accepting the stygma, and career ending, restriction on one's medical.

The plate test so common with FAA doctors is crap, plainly put. Antiquated technology that doesn't accurately reflect aviation duties - yes Ishihara, I'm talking to you. (Note, this is coming from a CFI and ATC Controller with a CV deficiency). However, its cheap and a quick way of determining whether there is a 'problem.'

Rant over.

If you want to put the info on here, I have a list going here at MY Flight Surgeon's office and I can add it to our list and post it when requested.

I have added Dr. Ray Steinhouser to my list I already had Ohio State University.

So if anyone needs the list you can either PM me or Dr. Forred or just post on here and we can post it.

Has anyone found either of these color vision tests in the Dallas, TX area?

We have Farnsworth Lantern (FALANT) and ATC plates (Dvorine 1953). So far so good on the Farnsworth bulb holding up, and we have one spare. Also we have found an occasional airman that fails the Farnsworth but passes the Dvorine. Need to call us for appointment because we bring the machine from Houston.
